AMX M4 49 is a French tier 8 heavy tank. Its a frontal-focused heavy, with good frontal armour but weak sides. It has good speed and mobility, a very strong turret, and a typical French 100mm gun with great penetration.

Using -10 gun depression:
Upper plate 285mm
Turret 315-380mm
Cupola 70mm
Armour vs tier 7 and 8 tanks:
Against tier 7 and 8 enemies, the upper plate is very strong, unless facehugging the AMX, most tanks will need premium ammo to penetrate it.
Some tier 8 tanks (230-248mm AP penetration) will not need premium ammo to go through the upper plate if it is not angled, and if the tank is not using enhanced armour.
When the hull is hidden, the AMX 49 has an extremely strong turret that only TDs can penetrate ( and only with premium ammunition). Other than the hatch, enemy MT, LT, and HT don’t have much chance to penetrate the turret.
Armour vs tier 9 tanks:
Against tier 9 enemies the hull armour can be penetrated by most enemy heavy tanks with AP, but most lower penetration mediums will still bounce off.
When using gun depression, most tanks will still need premium ammunition to go through the hull.
The turret remains very strong, only high penetration premium rounds will be able to go through it.
Overall the hull of the AMX M4 49 is thick, but not well angled, this means that its effective thickness of 235mm is actually quite weak for a tier 8 heavy. Using enhanced armour really helps though, and that’s why its recommended in the below section.
Gun
AMX M4 49 mounts a 100mm gun.
-Alpha damage is 310 on AP, 260 on APCR, and 350 on HE.
-Reload time is 8.2s, giving the tank 2276 DPM.
-Penetration is 232mm on AP, 263mm on APCR, and 50mm on HE.
–Estimated aim time is 3.9/4.1s.
–Base aim time is 2.3s, but it can get down to 1.77s.
-Dispersion is 0.335/0.295.
–Gun handling is 0.22/0.22/0.16, or 0.19/0.19/0.14 with Vertical Stabilizer.
The AMX 49’s gun is decent, nothing really too special, but not a bad armament by any means. It has good penetration, good DPM, and good dispersion; though its gun handling is poor and aim time is just average.
This gun is quite similar to the other 100 and 105mm guns in tier 8, and doesn’t really offer anything too different, but is a decent gun.
Mobility
-Top speed is 40km/h, reverse is -15km/h.
-Traverse speed is 34.6 deg/s on hard terrain, and 29.6 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 16.7 hp/t, it has a strong 1170 horsepower engine for its 70 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration rate is 13.9 hp/t on hard terrain, and 11.9 hp/t on medium terrain.
–Ground resistances are 1.2/1.4/2.0
Overall the AMX M4 49 has good mobility. The top speed is fairly high and the tank has good acceleration to be able to utilize it. The traverse speed is not very impressive though, and it holds the tank back from really being considered “very mobile”, though it is fairly fast for what it is.
Equipment, provisions, & consumables
AMX M4 49 has no special provisions/consumables.
Gun Rammer:
Due to having already very good penetration on both standard and premium ammunition, the AMX M4 49 does not need to use calibrated shells.
Its better instead to use a gun rammer, and improve its reload down to 8.2s, and give the tank 2276 DPM.
Enhanced Armour:
The hull of the AMX 49 is only 235mm thick (effective thickness), this means most premium ammunition cuts through easily.
The upper plate has a thick base value of 175mm, so enhanced armour takes it up to 182mm. This would make the effective frontal armour a much better 245mm.
The AMX M4 49 already has a good base HP of 1800, so its not crucial to improve its HP, use enhanced armour instead.
Vertical Stabilizer:
Due to the AMX 49 having bad gun handling for its 310 alpha, it needs to use vertical stabilizer to improve it. Its also an active frontline heavy tank, and will constantly be moving, and vertical stabilizer helps the tank to be more consistent when the tank has a more active playstyle.
The tank also already has quite good dispersion of 0.335, which generally won’t be an issue for the tank.
Gameplay advice
The AMX M4 49 plays as a generic heavy tank. It has a nearly identical playstyle to tanks like the Chi-Se, Tiger II, T54E2, or T32.
It has all the traits of a generic heavy, good frontal armour, decent to good general mobility, and a fairly average gun with average alpha.
General gameplay:
Take this tank to the heavy side of the map, its mobility isn’t quite good enough to compete with mediums or heaviums, and its much better equipped for fighting slower and larger targets (heavy tanks).
Use the good top speed to push more aggressive positions, but avoid angling the armour to enemies, try to keep the tank head-on.
Try to use hulldown or gun depression positions whenever possible, these positions are where the armour of the AMX M4 49 will be most effective.
Don’t angle or sidescrape:
As shown below, neither of these work well in this tank.

Angling/sidescraping will cause the weak hull shoulder to be exposed, and due to the position on the tank, this area will be exposed before your gun (when you reverse out to shoot), so enemies can damage you before you can even shoot back.
The AMX 49 generally shouldn’t turn the hull at all, as the sides are a very weak 55mm of base thickness, which makes them very easy to penetrate to HEAT rounds, and if over-angled. Higher penetration HE rounds also have no issue penetrating the sides if they are flat.
Track wheel damage:

vs 225mm AP
Even when well angled, enemies can shoot the track and damage your tank.
Penetrations through the well-angled track wheel happen due to double-overmatch occurring on your tank’s thin 55mm side armour.
This means the track wheel is far weaker against tanks with 110mm+ guns (since 55mmx2 = 110mm, only guns larger than 110mm will get the double-overmatch mechanic to occur).
Guns that are 110mm or smaller (105mm, 100mm, 90mm, 85mm, etc) will struggle more with penetrating the track wheel at that angle, but there are other weakpoints to aim for, like the cupola or hull shoulder.
This tank has a very similar playstyle to most heavies in the game, so just play it like a regular heavy and it should be easy to get used to.
Just go to the heavy tank frontline, use gun depression, go hulldown, and keep your armour towards the enemies at all times.
Overall
Armour – 7/10
Gun – 7/10
Mobility – 7.5/10
Speed – 8/10
AMX M4 49 is overall a good tank.
Armour is good on the upper plate and extremely strong on the turret. The hull can’t be angled/sidescraped, and the lower plate is weak. HE protection is quite poor for a heavy.
Gun has decent aim time, accuracy, and great gun depression. Penetration & DPM are quite good and DPM, gun handling is poor.
Mobility is good, a strong engine and good acceleration rate, though unimpressive traverse speed. Mobility is consistent across terrain types. Reverse speed is average.
Speed is great for a heavy, 40km/h.
Is it worth getting?
Though the AMX 49 is not a bad tank, there are just so many competing tanks that do what this does, but they can do it better.
If you really love French tanks and are really interested in the AMX M4 49, then yes its worth it. Its the only tier 8 French heavy tank that actually has decent frontal armour and a cyclic gun, both other French heavies in tier 8 are both autoloaders.
The AMX M4 49 has a great combination of stats which make it work well in battle as a standard heavy, and overall its a good tank.
7,000 gold is a reasonable price for the AMX M4 49, anything above that is too expensive. The tank can perform well in battle, but there are competing similar heavies that do it better.
