Lorraine 40 t

The Lorraine is a tier 8 French medium tank. Its one of the quickest tier 8 mediums, with great agility and top speed; it also features a high capacity 4 shell autoloader that can burst 900 damage.
For this the Lorraine trades armour, and it can’t bounce much.

Armour

vs 225mm AP (left image), 61mm HE (right image)
-Upper plate 75-80mm
-Lower plate 95mm
-Turret 60-95mm
(Note, the gun shooting the Lorraine in these images is a 122mm, so it can overmatch all the 40mm plates which the Lorraine is covered in. The Lorraine’s frontal upper plates and lower plates are all 40mm in thickness.)

Lorraine 40t has no armour to AP, it can’t bounce anything. Its front will resist most HE shells, but its sides are very easily penetrated as they are only 30mm thick.

Gun

The Lorraine 40t mounts a 90mm autoloader

-Alpha damage is 225 on AP, 190 on APCR, and 270 on HE
-It has a 2.5s intra-clip reload, and a 20s clip, reload giving it 1967 DPM
-The gun has 4 shells, so in 7.5s it can deal a 900 damage burst.
-Penetration is 212mm on AP, 259mm on APCR, and 45mm on HE
Estimated aim time is 3.6/3.9s
Base aim time is 2.2s, but it can get down to 1.87s.
-Dispersion is 0.317/0.285
Gun handling is 0.14/0.14/0.1, or 0.12/0.12/0.08 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -8 degrees.
-After-shot-dispersion is 4.000

Overall this gun is great. Its got high penetration with great accuracy, and a fairly good intra-clip of 2.5s. It also has the highest total burst damage in tier 8 mediums and lights, so you can isolate targets with under 900 HP and easily take them out. Aim time and gun handling aren’t the best, and combined they make the Lorraine have a fairly mediocre estimated aim time.

Its after-shot-dispersion is not great considering its fairly average 225 alpha, which can make it awkward to unload shots quickly if you need to aim between each shot (wuch as at long range, or aiming for a weakpoint)

Mobility

-Top speed is 60km/h forwards, and 23km/h in reverse
-Traverse speed is 58.3deg/s on hard terrain and 52.5deg/s on medium.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 24.6 hp/t, it has a very strong 978hp engine for its 39 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration is 27.3hp/t on hard terrain and 24.6hp/t on medium terrain.
-Ground resistances are good, with 0.9/1/1.4

The Lorraine 40t is the joint fastest tier 8 medium tank, with a 60km top speed. Its also one of the most mobile due to its great terrain resistance and effective acceleration rate.
Overall its a very nimble and quick tank for its large size, and its mobility is only beaten by the AMX CDC among medium tanks.

Equipment, provisions, & consumables

Lorraine 40t has no special provisions/consumables.

Improved Ventilation/Calibrated Shells
Either can work on this tank, and both can be viewed as the “correct” equipment choice.

Vents work as the Lorraine already has great penetration, and not using vents would improve its mediocre aim time and its already long reload.

Calibrated shells also work on this tank, as vents arguably don’t add that much benefit to the tank, and you may feel that you would rather sacrifice some of the other stats to have great penetration. Calibrated shells give the Lorraine 223mm AP penetration, 272mm APCR penetration, and 50mm HE penetration.

Improved Modules:
The Lorraine is very fast, it also weighs quite a lot at 39.75 tons. The pike-nose hull armour also makes it perfect for ramming enemy tanks. By taking improved modules, you will receive less damage from enemies when you ram them.

Improved Assembly:
There is no armour on this tank that is worth enhancing, so don’t use enhanced armour.

Instead use improved assembly to improve the HP of the tank. The Lorraine 40t has the highest base HP of all tier 8 mediums, at 1500 HP. Improved assembly takes this up to 1590 HP.

Vertical Stabilizer:
For a 225 alpha gun, the Lorraine doesn’t have the greatest gun handling. Use vertical stabilizer to make the tank more accurate during and after movement. The Lorraine is also an autoloader, so using vertical stabilizer greatly reduces the dispersion bloom after each shot you take, vital for unloading the magazine accurately.

Gameplay advice

The Lorraine 40t is an opportunistic support tank.

It needs allies to cover it while it reloads for a fairly long 20s, but it can also lay down good cover fire from the 2nd line or from a distance. While its stats may seem similar to a TVP T50/51, this doesn’t burst damage like a TVP can, its a slower damage output, so you have to play it accordingly.

Don’t try to get every shell in your magazine out:
If you tunnel vision trying to put out all 4 shells, you may put yourself in an unfavourable situation. Only unload the magazine if there are targets within a safe parameter. Don’t go chasing enemies into areas where they have support from other allies. Sometimes its just better to reload your magazine and be ready for the next engagement.

Similarly, don’t be hell-bent on putting all 4 shots into 1 tank only, this achieves the same effect, and you may be baited into the enemies lines of fire. If there are multiple targets, but the one you were shooting pulls back, just shoot a different target. If there are none, wait a few seconds to see if enemies poke out, if they don’t, then reload.

Look out for isolated tanks:
As the Lorraine has quite a large clip damage potential, it is perfect for taking out enemies who are alone, even more so ones with no turrets tanks.
If enemies have around 850 HP or less, you can be fairly confident in taking them out in a single clip. Be aware that though your clip does 900 damage, there is a chance that some shells may low roll, so if an enemy has 900 HP, you only really have a 50% chance of taking them out. If you do go for tanks with 900 HP and do low roll, you will be left with a 20 second reload before you can finish them off.

Use the mobility and take advantage of flanking opportunities, if your allies are holding a front and you can flank, do it. The Lorraine is accurate, and thus good at providing accurate support fire even from the other side of the map.

Overall

Armour – 3/10
Gun – 7.5/10
Mobility – 8.5/10
Speed – 10/10

Lorraine 40 t is overall a good tank.

Armour is weak, it can’t bounce anything. Its front can resist HE, but sides are easily penetrable.
Gun has amazing burst damage and great penetration. Accuracy is good, aim time & gun handling are mediocre, and reload is long.
Mobility is amazing, with a strong engine, high acceleration rate, and decent traverse speed.. Reverse speed is great.
Speed is high at 60km/h.

Though the Lorraine can be a great tank, its not easy to play due to a large profile, combined with needing quite a long time to unload its 4 shell clip. This can make it awkward for players not used to such a playstyle.

Is it worth getting?

Due to how hard this tank is to play, its definitely not a tank everyone will enjoy. If you are a player who likes playing tanks with autoloader guns, or like playing medium tanks, you would probably quite enjoy this tank.
Though for other players, its probably best to get a different tank, as some players may not like the long reload autoloader or poor armour of this tank.

Lorraine 40 t is worth 7,500 gold, its a very good tank and can be very fun when played right. Often its sold much cheaper though, and is worth getting if you think its a tank you’ll enjoy.
