Löwe

Last updated on 25 March 2025.

The Löwe is a classic German heavy tank, with one of the best handling guns in tier 8. It has strong armour and decent mobility, though its sluggish to accelerate. It is also among the best credit grinding tanks in the game for various reasons.

Using -8 gun depression:
Upper plate 350-375mm
Turret cheeks 265-500mm (weakest points 250-260mm)

Armour vs tier 7 enemies:
Most tier 7 enemies will be unable to penetrate the lower plate at all with standard ammo. Only tanks with high standard penetration (such as TDs and USA or German heavies) will be able to deal with the lower plate.

The lower plate can be penetrated by most tank’s premium ammo, however angling and wiggling the hull can still help to bounce the lower penetration premium ammo.

The turret is also extremely strong. The only real chance that tier 7s have against the Löwe’s turret will be it shoot right under the gun mantlet, where its 170mm thick.

Armour vs tier 8 enemies:
When facing tier 8 tanks, the lower plate will be fairly weak, but there are essentially no other weakpoints on the tank, especially when its using gun depression. While the turret has some weakpoints on the cheeks, these are generally still very troll.

Even when shooting premium ammo, no tier 8 MT, LT, or HT can penetrate the Löwe’s upper plate, and the turret will still be extremely resilient against the majority of premium ammo in tier 8.

When using the -8 gun depression, the upper plate/turret will be mostly invulnerable.

Armour vs tier 9 enemies:
Tier 9 enemies will need to aim at the same weakpoints as the tier 8 enemies. The turret and upper plate will still be strong, and even tier 9 tanks will still have to aim at the lower plate to penetrate.

When using gun depression, Löwe is still very strong due to that well rounded and angled turret armour, however due to tier 9s having higher penetration, you do have to watch out for enemies using premium ammo against the turret cheeks.

Gun

The Löwe mounts a 105mm gun

-Reload time is 8.6s for 310 alpha, giving it 2162 DPM.
-Penetration is 234mm on AP, 294mm on APCR, and 60mm on HE.
Estimated aim time is 3.6/3.4s
Base aim time is 2.3s, but it can get down to 1.77s.
-Dispersion is 0.299/0.254.
-Gun handling is 0.18/0.18/0.1, or 0.16/0.16/0.09 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -8 degrees.
-Shell velocities are 1150/1438/1150 m/s.

The Löwe’s gun is either average or above average in all of its stats. The DPM and alpha damage of the tank are just average for this tier, its still competitive enough to not feel like a low DPM tank.
Dispersion, gun handling, penetration (all shells), and shell velocity are all very impressive and among the best of any tier 8 HT. It makes the Löwe’s gun feel very snappy/accurate, consistent, and generally hard to miss shots with.

Mobility

-Top speed is 35km/h, and -15km/h in reverse
-Traverse speed is 40.8 deg/s on hard terrain, and 34.5 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 10.1 hp/t, it has a weak 936 hp engine for its 92.6 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration rate is 9.1 hp/t on hard terrain, and 7.7 hp/t on medium terrain.
Terrain resistances are 1.1/1.3/1.5

The Löwe is extremely slow at accelerating. Reaching its 35km/h top speed is very hard to achieve without using a speed boost or going down hill, since its engine is just so weak for its high weight.
Top speed is quite good considering its a superheavy tank, and traverse speed is very good, and the tank’s low acceleration is somewhat made up for by how quickly it can turn.
Considering the good armour of this tank, the mobility is decent.

Equipment, provisions, & consumables

Löwe has no special consumables or provisions.

Gun Rammer:
The Löwe’s DPM is on the lower side for 105mm guns in tier 8, and its penetration is definitely on the higher side. The tank will benefit much more from having a better reload time and higher DPM, since its penetration is already above average.

Gun rammer would decrease the reload time from 9.1s down to 8.6s, and increase DPM from 2054 to 2162.

Enhanced Armour:
The Löwe has got strong armour essentially everywhere on the front of the tank.
Enhanced armour will benefit every part of this tank, it will make the lower plate stronger, which means that if it angles, it can bounce quite a few tier 8 tanks off of it.

-It makes the turret stronger, so it will be even stronger against enemy’s premium ammo. It also increases the armour of the upper plate, which will make it impossible to penetrate, even to 340mm HEAT.
-The mid-bar also gets stronger, which makes it harder for tier 7 tanks to penetrate, as the mid bar is one of the only weakpoints for tier 7 tanks to shoot at.

Improved assembly also has its uses, but the Löwe doesn’t lack HP (with 1800 base), and you can really make great use of the tank’s lower plate, and improve the turret noticeably when using enhanced armour.

Vertical Stabilizer:
Since the Lowe is a heavy tank, it fights on the front line, so having refined gun would not help the tank in its gameplay style, especially as Löwe already has the best accuracy of any 105mm gun on a tier 8 heavy tank, so it definitely does not need refined gun. Using vertical stabilizer will make the gun more consistent in the mid to close range battles heavy tanks usually fight in.

Gameplay advice

The Löwe is a generic German heavy tank, and plays very similar to the other German 105mm HT in tier 8, the E 75 TS, Keiler, VK 45.02 A and Tiger II.

Compared to these other tanks the Löwe is a more gun oriented heavy, with better gun stats in most areas but more lacking in mobility, while still having a similar armour profile.

General gameplay:
Due to the poor acceleration of the Löwe, its generally best to go to the HT flank. The tank is very slow at going up hills or even reaching its top speed, so often it will struggle if trying to play on the MT flank when it doesn’t need to.

The Löwe is well suited to the usual heavy tank style of gameplay, which is good positional use with its armour. Löwe is proficient at sidescraping due to its turret placement and hull side design, and can utilize corner baiting thanks to its strong lower plate.

The tank is also very solid when hulldown due to its rounded turret shape. Though it has a few narrow slivers on the outer edges of the turret cheeks that can be weak, its generally not a problem when facing most enemies and ammo types.

Fully utilize the gun strengths:
Take advantage of the Löwe’s great gun handling, accuracy, shell velocity, and penetration. This tank is generally much better at taking long range shots or hitting small weakpoints compared to other tanks.

Wiggle the hull:
Despite bad acceleration rate, the hull traverse speed is quite fast. This means that if you have no cover with your lower plate exposed, you can turn the hull left/right to try and bait a shot from the enemy into the thick tracks.
Sometimes enemies will miss the lower plate and the shot will get eaten by the tracks due to the erratic traverse and hull movement.

Use hulldown & gun depression positions:
The Löwe is very strong in hulldown positions due to its great upper plate and rounded turret. You have an even bigger advantage thanks to the accurate and high penetration gun (you can aim faster/expose the tank for a shorter time).

When exposing the turret, don’t just sit still. It doesn’t need to be wiggled (since turning the turret makes it weaker), but if you just sit on a ridge without pulling back, enemies will have time to fully aim in their shot, and they may be able to hit the weaker outer edge of the turret cheeks. So just pull back after you put out a shot, when reloaded then pull forward and shoot again.

Lower plate baiting:
The Löwe is able to poke its front hull around the corner and bait enemy shots using its strong lower plate.

Note that the tank isn’t invulnerable when doing this, as the middle armour bar is weak and can be penetrated by most enemies. The main point of doing this is to bait shots from enemies who are already aiming for your lower plate expecting to be able to penetrate.

vs 225mm AP
Note the weak mid bar, and how the very front of the hull side is just visible around the corner.

Sidescraping:
The Löwe can sidescrape quite well, but be aware of the weakpoints. The outer edge of the turret cheeks, the turret ring bulge on the hull, and the area under the gun mantlet are all weakpoints.

If enemies have good accuracy and are in close range, they may be able to exploit these weakpoint, however they are small and quite hard to hit.
The track wheel is not actually that weak, as the tracks themselves are 40mm thick, with 84mm thick armour behind them.

vs 225mm AP

Note the weak area where the turret ring bulges out

Overall gameplay of the Löwe is just that of a generic heavy tank. It plays similar to most other 105mm HT in tier 8, just with less acceleration traded for a more consistent gun. It works well using sidescraping/angling and hulldown positions.

Overall

Armour – 7/10
Gun – 8/10
Mobility – 4.5/10
Speed – 5/10

Löwe is overall a good tank.

Armour is solid on the lower plate with a very strong upper plate. Turret has a few weakpoints but is generally strong, armour is usable in sidescraping/angling.
Gun has great gun handling, accuracy, & penetration; with decent DPM, aim time, and a comfortable -8 gun depression.
Mobility is decent, with a weak engine and very poor acceleration rate on both terrain types, yet very good traverse speed on both terrain types. Reverse speed is a good -15km/h.
Speed is decent at 35km/h.

Is it worth getting?

The Löwe is definitely a tank worth getting. With its reliable, high penetration, accurate gun, and consistent armour, the Löwe also makes great credits. The consistency of the gun allows the player to rack up damage easily, and the high penetration means that it won’t need to use gold ammo (which costs extra credits) often.

The Löwe is a great tank and is definitely worth considering among the other German 105mm superheavies (E 75 TS and Keiler), its gun is by far one of the most consistent in tier 8, sporting a very solid armour profile, and its mobility is not terrible considering its good armour.

The Löwe is worth 8,000 gold. Its usually sold for less than this price though, and its not worth buying if it costs more. Its a strong tank, its also enjoyable and quite easy to play. Being among the best credit makers in the game is definitely not something to ignore.
