M48A2 Räumpanzer

The M48A2 Räumpanzer is a tier 8 German medium tank. It may seem like a heavium, but it really doesn’t play like one. This tank has a great 90mm gun, decent mobility, and decent armour.

Armour vs tier 7 tanks:
When faced against tier 7 enemies, the lower plate of this tank will actually be quite troll, but it has to be at an angle or enemies will easily be able to penetrate right through the shovel.
The hatch is also a weakpoint, anything that hits will penetrate.

Armour vs tier 8-9 tanks:
To tier 8-9 enemies, most will be able to easily cut through the tank’s frontal armour, the best way to get bounces from these enemies is to keep the tank traversing left/right, or just hide the lower plate completely and go hulldown. You aren’t guaranteed to bounce, even if doing this.

The turret will be very strong to most enemies, but higher penetration tanks may try aiming for the outer cheek areas where its only 200-230mm in thickness. If you keep the tank moving it will make it harder for enemies to aim for this.

For all enemies it faces:
-The hatch is a weakpoint to tanks of any tier. If you go hulldown or use gun depression in this tank, try and drive parallel or at least diagonally up the hill/ridgeline. Keep moving backwards/forwards so the hatch (which is very large) is never stationary, it makes it harder for enemy guns to track it with the constant movement and changes of direction.

-Sidescraping can be very effective in this tank. The hull sides are shaped  like “<>”, making them very well angled. The front half is 78mm, which is strong, but the rear half is 36mm, which is very weak.
While the rear part will still be very well angled and easily an auto-ricochet to all AP and APCR, it can be overmatched by any guns larger than 108mm. If you know enemies are using a 110, 120, 122, etc in gun caliber, be aware that they can pen the rear-half of your side armour no matter what angle you are at.

Playing against a Räumpanzer

The image above depicts the rough area where you should be shooting behind the shovel blade.

Yellow area:
This is the weakest point on the hull of the Räumpanzer. Most guns with 170-180mm penetration shouldn’t have any problems penetrating it. If you miss this weakpoint, you will either hit the tracks or a point of the upper/lower plate over 235mm in thickness.

Green area:
These areas are better angled/thicker than the yellow areas, so lower penetration tanks not be able to penetrate them, however tanks with higher penetration (215-220mm+) will have no issue going through these areas.

(Note that the situation changed when gun depression is used.)

Against HEAT ammo:
Räumpanzer’s shovel blade will stop almost any HEAT due to the angle of the armour behind it, and due to the distance it is at in relation to the upper and lower plates. If your tank has HEAT as premium (or standard) ammo, try aim for the upper areas of the upper plate where there is no shovel.

vs 220mm AP
The gun shooting the Räumpanzer is a 105mm gun, so it can’t overmatch the rear sides of the tank.

Note the side armour shape.

Sidescraping:
If you have a gun larger than 108mm, and a Räumpanzer is sidescraping against you, shoot AP against the rear of its side armour, as it will always penetrate due to overmatch (you can see this in the armour images above).

If the Räumpanzer is sidescraping with turret faced off the right, you can also just easily aim for the hatch as its on the right side of the turret.

Gun

The Räumpanzer has a typical American 90mm gun

-Alpha damage is 225 on AP, 190 on APCR, and 270 on HE
-It has a 5.4s reload, giving it 2505 DPM
-Penetration is 210mm on AP, 260mm with APCR, and 45mm on HE
Estimated aim time is 3.2s/3.4s
Base aim time is 2s, but it can get down to 1.63s.
-Dispersion is 0.317/0.285
Gun handling is 0.14/0.14/0.08,  or 0.12/0.12/0.07 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -9 degrees.

Overall the tank has a good gun, high DPM, fast reload, great penetration, and decent accuracy. The gun handling and dispersion are slightly below average for 225 damage, but its not too noticeable.

Mobility

-Top speed is 42km/h, and a reverse speed of -18km/h.
-Traverse speed is 54.4 deg/s on hard terrain and 48.3 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 16.7 hp/t, it has a strong 1001 hp engine for its 60 ton weight.
-Acceleration on hard terrain is 20.8hp/t, and 18.5hp/t on medium terrain.
-Ground resistances are 0.8/0.9/1.8

The mobility stats in game don’t do the tank justice, in game the Räumpanzer seems like it has sluggish acceleration with a low top speed. However, the hidden stats mean that in actuality the Räumpanzer is a fairly agile tank due to a higher effective acceleration rate.

Equipment, provisions, & consumables

The Räumpanzer has no special provisions/consumables.

Gun Rammer:
The penetration of the Räumpanzer is already quite good for a medium tank, with 210mm on AP and 260mm on APCR, both are good values, and this tank really doesn’t struggle to penetrate enemies.

Use a gun rammer to improve the DPM of this tank. Gun rammer will lower the reload time from 5.8s to 5.4s, and increase the DPM from 2330 to 2505.

Improved Modules:
Räumpanzer weighs a hefty 60 tons, making it the 2nd heaviest tier 8 medium tank. While it may not have the highest top speed, it can definitely still do some very good ramming with its great acceleration. Using improved modules will reduce the damage you receive from ramming an enemy vehicle.

Improved Assembly:
Due to the armour layout of the tank (strong turret and upper plate, extremely weak hatch and weak lower plate), using enhanced armour won’t make a noticeable difference on the Räumpanzer

Improved assembly takes the HP of the Räumpanzer from 1450 up to 1537 HP, a very healthy amount for a medium tank.

Vertical Stabilizer:
The Räumpanzer has good dispersion of 0.326, it doesn’t need improving since this tank isn’t a long range sniper. Its more beneficial to the tank for it to take vertical stabilizer, which will allow the tank to more consistently hit shots while its moving, and to aim in quickly after it stops moving.

Gameplay advice

Though Räumpanzer may seem like a heavium, with its low top speed and “strengthened” armour, it isnt.

The Räumpanzer is just a regular, generic medium tank. Though it has bit of a difference in stats, it has the same playstyle as other generic mediums, such as the O-47 or 59-Patton.

General gameplay:
Take this tank to the medium side of the map. This is where the armour will be most noticeable, as most mediums have far less penetration than heavies.

Try to go hulldown and use gun depression whenever possible, as it hides the weaker hull armour. Also try to wiggle the hull if out in the open, since enemies can’t actually see your armour, it can cause them to bounce occasionally.

Don’t rely on armour:
While the armour of this tank is fairly good for a medium tank, its still not reliable in battle.

The armour can sometimes troll enemies, especially ones which use HEAT, have low penetration, or don’t know the weakpoints of the tank. However, its best to play the tank without relying on the armour (especially the hull).

The armour is the most reliable in hulldown, when only the turret is exposed; but even then, the left side turret cheek is sometimes penetrable, and there’s a huge cupola on the roof.

The tank plays just like most other regular medium tanks, being quite agile with a strong turret and an annoying quick-firing gun. Just play it like you would play most regular mediums, but use its armour as an advantage against tier 7 tanks, or HEAT-firing enemies.

Overall

Armour – 6.5/10
Gun – 8/10
Mobility – 6/10
Speed – 4/10

M48A2 Räumpanzer is overall a good tank.

Armour is good for a medium. Its overall quite troll on the hull, with a fairly reliable turret, though a big weakpoint. HE protection is good.
Gun has good aim time, accuracy, DPM, and penetration. Gun depression is great, though gun handling is mediocre. Alpha is decent but not high.
Mobility is good, a decent engine and good effective acceleration rate, and with decent enough traverse speeds. Reverse speed is just below average.
Speed is poor, at 42km/h.

Is it worth getting?

While the tank is quite good in its stats, its not “the best” medium tank, and it doesn’t have an extremely fun or exciting play-style. If you get the tank, it is a good tank, though its not worth paying a load of gold for as it.
This plays in almost the exact same way as a 59-Patton, which is a much cheaper tank.

Räumpanzer is worth 6,500 gold. Anything above that is overpaying as its closest competitors are all usually sold for around 5k gold.
