59-Patton

The 59-Patton is a “Chinese” tier 8 premium medium tank. It is literally just an M48 Patton turret, with its 90mm gun, slapped on the hull of a WZ-120/Type 59.
This tank has good armour, a great gun, and decent mobility. What it lacks is fun factor, as this is one of the more generic tier 8 premiums.

Armour

(The 59-Patton in the images is using Enhanced Armour)

vs 225mm AP (left image), 265mm APCR (right image)
When flat and facing head-on:

Upper plate 180-195mm
Lower plate 190-198mm
Turret face 235-330mm+ (235mm weakest point around mantlet)
Cupola 177mm

vs 225mm AP (top image), 265mm APCR (bottom image)
Using -10 gun depression:

Upper plate 265-290mm

Turret face 255-410mm (255mm weakest point around mantlet)

Cupola 182mm

VS tier 7:
Against tier 7 tanks the 59-Patton has armour comparable to heavy tanks (of tier 7). The hull upper plate can easily bounce most tier 7 tanks, with the exception of German and American heavy tanks. Angling the hull increases the chances of bounce even more.

The turret is impenetrable to even most tank’s premium rounds (on flat ground), and the hatch is challenging for most tanks to penetrate as it actually has quite good thickness of 177mm.

In hulldown no tank’s premium rounds can penetrate the turret, only the hatch remains about the same thickness.

VS tier 8:
Against tier 8 enemies, only lower penetration mediums and lights will bounce off the upper plate when its on flat ground. Most tanks in tier 8 will be able to fairly easily penetrate the upper plate, even if it is angled.

The turret is strong, and most tanks you face will struggle to penetrate it. The cupola is weak but its much harder to hit when the tank is moving about.

When using gun depression, the turret is essentially impenetrable except for the hatch. Moving the tank back and fourth is preferable so enemies cant easily aim for the cheeks or the hatch.

VS tier 9:
Tier 9 tanks will be able to easily go through the hull, and most will be able to easily penetrate the turret cheeks when its on flat ground.

When using gun depression, the tank is still quite tough to deal with, as its upper plate is very strong, and turret is still solid. Tier 9 tanks will have a higher chance of penetrating the turret cheeks with premium ammunition though, and the hatch is still an easy weakpoint.

vs 182mm AP

Against tier 7 tanks (which have 155-190mm penetration) the Type 59 hull has very good armour and can angle to get quite a few bounces.

Gun

The 59-Patton mounts an 90mm gun

-Alpha damage is 225 on AP, 190 on HEAT, and 270 on HE
-It has a 5.5s reload, giving it 2467 DPM
-Penetration on AP is 180mm, HEAT is 268mm, and HE is 45mm.
-Aim time is 3.3/3.5s
-Dispersion is 0.308/0.277
Gun handling is 0.12/0.12/0.08, or 0.1/0.1/0.07 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -10 degrees

This is overall a great gun, its good in every regard. Penetration is good, DPM is high, reload is quick, accuracy and aim time are both good, and gun handling is very comfortable. As the hull is that of a Type 59, the gun is mounted quite low to the ground, which makes that -10 gun depression feel even more significant.

Mobility

-Top speed is 50km/h forwards, and -20km/h in reverse
-Traverse speed is 70.7 deg/s on hard terrain, and 57.8 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 16.5 hp/t, it has a decent 598 horsepower engine for its 36 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration rate is 18.3 hp/t on hard terrain, and 15 hp/t on medium terrain.
Terrain resistances are not the best, having 0.9/1.1/1.4

The 59-Patton has one of the lowest acceleration rates of all tier 8 medium tanks, and you really do feel this in battle. The tank turns quickly and has a decent top speed, but its average speed is quite low due to that fairly weak effective acceleration rate.

Equipment, provisions, & consumables

The 59-Patton does not have any special provisions or consumables.

3% + 10% Fuel:
Its worth using double fuel provisions on this tank, as it definitely needs that additional engine power. This additional 3% fuel adds 0.5 hp/t acceleration on hard terrain, and 0.4 hp/t on medium terrain.

Gun Rammer:
The 59-Patton already has very high penetration capability thanks to its HEAT ammunition, so there is absolutely no need to run calibrated shells.

Using gun rammer gives this tank a 5.5s reload with 225 alpha for 2467 DPM.

Enhanced Armour:
Using enhanced armour really helps the 59-Patton to bounce shots on all areas of its armour. It makes a difference to the turret cheeks, cupola, and both upper and lower plates. It will improve:
Upper plate from 180mm to 187mm
Lower plate from 190mm to 197mm
Weakest point on the turret cheeks from 236mm to 246mm
Cupola from 177mm to 184mm

There is no need for improved assembly on this tank as it already has a good amount of HP at 1400.

Vertical Stabilizer:
The 59-Patton should use vertical stabilizer for 2 reasons:
1 – It has good accuracy (0.308) so it does not need to use refined gun
2 – Its an active medium tank, so it does not sit still often in battle and is constantly moving around.

The stabilizer helps to improve the accuracy of the tank when its moving, bringing the gun handling down to 0.1/0.1/0.07, which is extremely good.

Gameplay advice

The 59-Patton is just like the O-47 in its gameplay. Its generic. Its a tank with decent armour, decent gun, and decent mobility, but it doesn’t specialize in one particular area.

The gameplay of this tank is just regular, standard medium tank gameplay:
-Use gun depression and turret armour.
-Flank around enemies when possible
-Hide the hull behind cover, even on flat ground, also angle the armour
-Go to the medium tank flank, don’t go with the heavies (unless you are alone on the MT side).
-Never be stationary in hulldown, keep moving back and fourth so enemies hopefully miss the hatch
-Be active, don’t just camp in one spot if there are no enemies, push or flank

The 59-Patton features the most standard gameplay of any medium tank, so its very easy to use and get used to if you’ve played mediums before.

Overall

Overall the 59-Patton is a good tank. It has great armour for a medium, with both a solid turret armour profile and hull armour profile. Its well balanced by having a hatch, but the hatch is strong enough to bounce some same tier tanks and most lower tier tanks. The gun is great all round, with high penetration (on HEAT), great DPM, a quick reload, and great accuracy and handling. The mobility is decent enough, with a very high traverse speed and good top speed, but not the greatest acceleration rate. The tank is neither slow nor fast.

Is it worth getting?

The 59-Patton will not be worth getting to most players. While it is generally quite cheap, and its a good tank, it doesn’t have the most exciting or fun gameplay; of course that is subjective to each player but generally most players prefer a tank that specializes in an area: gun, armour, or mobility. The tanks that aren’t specialized are generally less popular/considered less fun.

The 59-Patton is worth getting for new players who want a premium medium tank. It has a simple and comfortable playstyle, and perfect flexibility and armour. Its an easy tank to get used to even if you haven’t played a medium before. Other players who would enjoy this are players who like the DPM and hulldown combination, and don’t mind the tank being a bit slower than other MT.

Other than the above, most players should just save their gold for a tank that they would find more fun.

The 59-Patton is worth 6,500 gold. Its a good tank, it makes credits, its generally sold cheap, and its comfortable to play. The only issue is that its not the most exciting or fun of tier 8 premiums.
