A.P. AMX 30

The Alt Proto AMX 30 is a tier 8 French medium tank. It shares quite a few similar features with the tier 9 and tier 10 AMX 30s, having a very accurate gun, good mobility, and decent armour on both the turret and hull.

When flat and facing head-on:

Upper plate 188-215mm+ (lower part is 130-160mm)
Lower plate 77-88mm
Turret face 130-160 (up to 195mm on edges)
Gun mantlet 215mm

Note that the upper plate is split into 2 different parts, both 80mm nominal thickness, but with different angling. The lower part is weaker than the upper part by about 30mm in effective thickness.
The angling changes along the flat line you can see on the upper plate, just behind the lights.

Using-10 gun depression:

Upper plate 340-400mm (lower part 185-230mm) auto-ricochet

Turret face 135-160 (up to 200mm on edges)

Gun mantlet 220mm

VS tier 7:
Against tier 7 tanks the Alt Proto actually has pretty good armour.

Medium and light tanks will struggle to penetrate the upper plate, even when its not angled. Heavy tanks will struggle to penetrate the upper plate when its slightly angled. The gun mantlet will bounce most enemy tank’s premium rounds, but some enemies can still easily penetrate the cheeks.

When using gun depression, the hull is impenetrable to all enemies, and most tank’s premium ammo will struggle against the gun mantlet.

There is an image below showing the armour against a tier 7’s level of standard penetration.

VS tier 8:
Against tier 8 tanks the Alt Proto AMX 30 has decent armour, it can bounce some lower penetration medium and light tanks, especially when the hull is angled. When the hull isn’t angled, then all enemies can easily penetrate the hull.

The turret is fairly weak on all areas other than the gun mantlet, which is 215-220mm thick (depending on equipment choice). This will be able to bounce even most heavy tank ammunition, but its still best to play like the turret is weak and not rely on it.

VS tier 9:
Against tier 9 tanks the Alt Proto basically has no armour. Unless angled to be an auto-ricochet, the hull won’t bounce anything. The gun mantlet will be easily penetrated by most enemies, the only ones which may struggle are lower penetration medium and light tanks (with around 220mm on standard ammo).

When using fully gun depression, the upper plate is extremely strong, and is actually able to bounce most HEAT rounds from enemies (all AP and APCR will bounce due to the angling). The turret will still be fairly weak as most tier 9 enemies who have over 220mm penetration.

As shown here, against tier 7 tanks the Alt Proto AMX 30 actually has quite a lot of red areas on its armour.
Its especially noticeable at distance (right image)

This is against 168mm AP, a median between tier 7 HT and MT levels of penetration.

Gun

The Alt Proto AMX 30 mounts a 100mm gun

-Alpha damage is 280 on AP, 240 on APCR, and 350 on HE
-It has a 7.5s reload, giving it 2242 DPM
-Penetration on AP is 218mm, APCR is 262mm, and HE is 50mm.
Estimated aim time is 3.4/3.7s
-Dispersion is 0.308/0.277
Gun handling is 0.14/0.14/0.1, or 0.12/0.12/0.09 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -10 degrees

Overall this gun is quite good. It has nice DPM, good alpha damage, and a decent reload. Its penetration is high and has great accuracy and gun depression. The aim time and gun handling are decent, not terrible but also not amazing.

Mobility

-Top speed is 58km/h forwards, and -20km/h in reverse
-Traverse speed is 59.8 deg/s on hard terrain, and 49.8 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 25.3 hp/t, it has a very powerful 851 horsepower engine for its 34 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration rate is 25.3 hp/t on hard terrain, and 21.1 hp/t on medium terrain.
Terrain resistances are average, with 1/1.2/1.5

Overall this is good mobility. The top speed is high, and acceleration rate is very good, only the traverse speed is a bit lacking, but that can be improved with equipment.

Equipment, provisions, & consumables

The Alt Proto AMX 30 does not have any special provisions or consumables.

Gun Rammer:
The Alt Proto AMX 30 has already got some very nice penetration for a medium tank. Its above average on both AP and APCR, and as it carries no HEAT rounds, calibrated shells would be wasted if you used it on this tank.

Its far better to use the gun rammer, and improve the comfortable reload and DPM that this tank has. The gun rammer lowers the reload time from 8.1s to 7.5s, and increases the DPM from 2085 up to 2242, which are very nice stats considering its comfortable 280 alpha.

Enhanced Armour/Improved Assembly:
Both enhanced armour and improved assembly have benefits to this tank. You may want to use Improved assembly to increase the HP and play like you have no armour; or you may want to use Improved assembly to make your upper plate and gun mantlet stronger.

Enhanced armour’s main benefits would be:
-Additional 9mm to the gun mantlet, making it 224mm thick on flat ground.
-Additional 7mm effective armour to the upper plate, making it 195mm thick on flat ground.
-Enhancing all 50mm plates to 52mm, stopping 152-155mm guns from overmatching the shoulders and side armour.

Other than what’s mentioned above, enhanced armour doesn’t help other areas of the tank significantly, its just useful for bouncing more tanks when they hit the gun mantlet or upper plate.

Improved assembly is also a viable option to take on this tank, it would take this tank’s decent 1350 base HP up to 1431 HP.

Improved control:
The Alt Proto AMX 30 has an very good effective and base acceleration rate, though its hull traverse speed is rather unimpressive.

Due to that strong engine, the Alt Proto AMX 30 can afford to lose some engine power and increase its traverse speed with improved control. In most situations, this will actually help the tank’s mobility more, as a higher traverse speed will allow it to maneuver better, and to maintain speed when moving.

Improved control would lower the effective acceleration rate by 0.9 and 1.1 hp/t on medium and hard terrain, but it would increase the hull traverse speed by 2.3 and 2.75 deg/s on medium and hard terrain.

With improved control, the new mobility would be:
24.3 hp/t acceleration on hard terrain, 20.2 hp/t acceleration on medium terrain.
62.6 deg/s traverse speed on hard terrain, 52.1 deg/s traverse speed on medium terrain.

Vertical Stabilizer:
The aim time and dispersion of the Alt Proto AMX 30 are both good already, so its far better to improve the gun handling of the tank, which is just average.

As the Alt Proto AMX 30 has an active playstyle, it really benefits from the improved dispersion-on-movement that the vertical stabilizer gives. This will just make the tank far more accurate, as the gun will bloom out less, and the tank won’t need to take as much time to become accurate.

Gameplay advice

The Alt Proto AMX 30’s gameplay shares some resemblance with the other AMX 30 tanks, however, the tank does feel a lot more fragile. It can’t be aggressive early in the battle, even though it actually has decent armour. The tank just gets ripped apart so quickly if its not played cautiously.

The basic gameplay of this tank is as a support medium, it should be focussed on using its mobility to move around the battle so that its gun can be in a favourable position to deal damage. If it does end up in an engagement with enemy tanks, its gun mantlet and upper plate armour can bounce some shots.

Use gun depression:
Using gun depression greatly increases the armour effectiveness of the Alt Proto AMX 30. The turret armour will increase slightly, but just the small 5-8mm effective armour increase is enough to push it over the average penetration of tier 8 heavies (which is about 225mm). This means that enemies must take the time to aim for the cheeks of the tank, as hitting the gun mantlet would result in a bounce.

The upper plate also becomes far stronger, so strong that even most tier 9 enemies are unable to penetrate it with premium ammunition.

When using gun depression, make sure to never sit still, just like with the AMX 30 B and AMX 30 1er, the Alt Proto AMX 30 has a fairly strong mantlet but weak turret cheeks. Keep moving back and fourth so that its not easy for enemies to aim on those turret cheeks, and increase their chances of accidentally hitting the gun mantlet.

Don’t over expose:
When using gun depression, only expose your tank to the point you need. If you extend too far over the ridge, enemies may be able to shoot the lower part of the upper plate, which is much weaker than the rest of the upper plate.
Not over exposing also can make your turret harder to penetrate. Many enemies will be forced to shoot the cheeks of the turret, as most can’t penetrate the gun mantlet. If you keep the lower half of the turret hidden, enemies can’t shoot under the gun, and are forced to shoot only to the left and right of the mantlet, or the cupola.

Angle the armour:
Against lower penetration tier 8 tanks and all tier 7 tanks you should angle the armour, or at least wiggle the tank to make the upper plate harder to penetrate.
While this does expose the weaker sides and shoulders, the importance is less on whether or not the enemy can penetrate, but more about confusing them.

If you keep angling and moving the tank, the penetrable areas will continuously change. The enemy may slip up and accidentally shoot one of the red areas, or bounce of a plate with a changing angle.

Its not necessary to do this when you are using gun depression, as the upper plate is too strong for anything to penetrate.

Give time to aim:
The gun is accurate, the handling is decent, and the aim time is quite good, but you still have to aim. Due to its dispersion on move being fairly average and nothing special, you can’t just expect to snap every shot without aiming, some do go in, but its not always. You will miss quite a few shots if you don’t let the gun aim in at all.
If you have the chance, don’t rush the shot, give the gun time to aim. Even just 0.5-1s can make quite a big difference, as the tank is already fairly accurate so it doesn’t have to aim for long at all.

Don’t play over-aggressively:
The Alt Proto AMX 30 is a support tank. While it does have some decent armour, its still best to not rush in early and lose all your hitpoints early in the battle. Like all support medium tanks, the Alt Proto AMX 30 excels in the later stages of the game, where its superb penetration, accuracy, and mobility can really carry the team to a win.
Its in these later stages of the game where your HP is most important, so rushing aggressive positions early does not often work out for this tank.
Its best to wait till you know more information about the enemy team, where their tanks are, what types of tanks are on which side of the map. This way you can better plan the battle to go in your favour.

Its better to be late to an engagement than it is to lose all your HP and be back in the garage.

Overall

Overall the Alt Proto AMX 30 is a good tank. It has just very comfortable all-round statistics which make it quite enjoyable.
The the gun is great, having very good penetration, accuracy, and gun depression. 280 alpha allows for the perfect mix if good DPM and nice damage per shot. The armour of the tank is decent, but nothing too amazing, the gun mantlet is fairly strong, and the upper plate is decent on flat ground. When using full gun depression, the upper plate becomes fully impenetrable. Considering this armour, the tank’s mobility is amazing, high top speed with high acceleration rate, but a fairly mediocre traverse speed.

Is it worth getting?

The Alt Proto AMX 30 is worth getting if you just like a consistent tank. Its gun is consistent with accuracy, penetration, and damage; and its armour and mobility are both good enough to make using the gun quite easy.
The Alt Proto AMX 30 just isn’t the most fun or interesting of tanks. Its playstyle is fairly monotonous, especially as you can’t really utilize your mobility or armour early in the battle. If you do try to use the armour, then the tank is even less enjoyable, as it falls apart very quickly on the frontline.

The Alt Proto AMX 30 is worth 7,000 gold. Its a good tank with some very nice statistics, but its not the easiest to get used to, due to its fairly fragile armour, and passive early-game gameplay.
The Alt Proto AMX 30 also just isn’t the most interesting of tanks, though its definitely quite different from other tier 8 mediums, its playstyle is still that of a generic and basic medium.
The tank is good, but its not the most exciting or fun tank you could buy.
