When flat and facing head-on:
Upper plate 340mm
Lower plate 270mm
Lower-lower plate 225mm
Hull shoulders 380mm

Turret 300-1000mm+
Left cupola 160mm
Right cupola 215mm

Using -8 gun depression

Upper plate 425-440mm
Turret 340-1000mm+

Note how both cupolas are fully hidden, as they are so far back on the tank’s long turret.

Armour vs tier 9 enemies:
Against most tier 9 tanks the upper part of the lower plate on the AMX M4 54 will be quite hard to penetrate, but the lower-lower plate is weak to all enemies.

The upper plate and turret are completely impenetrable to all tier 9 HT, MT, and LT. There is a hatch they can shoot, but this disappears when using gun depression.

Armour vs tier 10 enemies:
Tier 10 tanks will see essentially the same thing as tier 9, nothing can penetrate the upper plate or the turret, other than on it’s hatch.

The lower plate will still show up as red to many tanks (mainly mediums), tanks that shoot APCR as standard ammo, and lower penetration HT (as shown above).

The lower-lower plate can be penetrated by all tier 10 tanks, but upper plate and turret are impenetrable even to very high penetration rounds.

Gun

AMX M4 54 mounts a 130mm gun.

-Alpha damage is 450 on APCR, 380 on HEAT, and 600 on HE
-It has a 10s reload, giving it 2695 DPM
-Penetration on APCR is 257mm,HEAT is 330mm, and HE is 60mm.
Estimated aim time is 4.2s/4.5s
Base aim time is 2.5s, but it can get down to 2.04s.
-Dispersion is 0.362/0.326
Gun handling is 0.2/0.2/0.1, or 0.17/0.17/0.09 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -8 degrees

The gun of the AMX M4 54 feels decent for its alpha damage, it’s aim time is good, gun handling is decent, and penetration is good (mainly on HEAT).
It’s DPM is rather low and accuracy isn’t great, but it’s still good enough to compete with other tanks, and the fairly quick 10s reload is nice to have.

Gun depression is comfortable, and the tank can easily use most ridgelines. However, be aware that it has a large hull, and the -8 degrees on this tank won’t feel the same as -8 degrees on something such as a T110E5.

Mobility

-Top speed is 45km/h forwards, and -20km/h in reverse
-Traverse speed is 41.5 deg/s on hard terrain, and 27.7 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 16.7hp/t, it has a strong 1112 horsepower engine for its 67 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration rate is 16.7 hp/t on hard terrain, and 11.1 hp/t on medium terrain.
Terrain resistances are 1/1.5/1.9

While its stats may seem extremely impressive in game (showing 16.7hp/t, 45km top speed, and 41.5 degrees traverse), don’t expect to be impressed. It’s poor terrain resistance on medium terrain (the most common terrain type in game) cause the tank to be significantly slower than the in-game stats show.

It’s mobility feels more like a tank with a 38-40km/h top speed, and if you think of it that way, you won’t be disappointed. One thing that is impressive is the -20 km/h reverse speed, which is quite insane for such a heavily armoured tank.

This is not to say it’s slow, as it definitely can reach it’s 45km/h top speed (when not constantly turning), and considering the amount of HP and armour on the tank, it’s mobility is indeed good.

Consumables & Provisions

AMX M4 54 has Sandbag Armour for special consumables/provisions.

Provisions:
Running 6% sandbag armour, 10% fuel, and 10% food will give this tank the best performance.

10% fuel is essential on the AMX 54, the tank has a great top speed, but struggles to get there, it also has quite low traverse speed. Fuel improves both traverse speed and acceleration, helping it eventually get to its speed.
10% food makes everything about the tank better, this is especially important to improve the tank’s gun stats.
6% sandbag armour is basically a free 150 HP, it will increase the AMX 54’s longevity in battles and make it a more formidable opponent to fight.

Equipment loadout

Calibrated Shells:
Gun rammer does work on this tank, due to the already decent penetration of 330mm on HEAT, however calibrated shells is a more optimal choice due to the often hulldown gameplay of this tank.

Since the AMX M4 54 is based around hulldown gameplay, often it works better to have higher penetration to be able to reliably deal with enemies which are also hulldown. Due to such solid hulldown armour and high HP, the AMX 54 can also afford to reload a bit longer.

Calibrated shells would increase the penetration on APCR from 257mm to 270mm, on HEAT from 330mm to 363mm, and on HE from 60mm to 66mm.
Gun rammer would improve the reload time from 10.9s down to 10.2s, and improve DPM from 2474 to 2660.

Improved Assembly:
Enhanced armour is not needed on the AMX M4 54, as it already has a very strong upper plate, turret, and a decent lower plate. Enhanced armour wouldn’t benefit the tank on any area except the lower plate (which you should try to avoid exposing in battle anyway), so its just not needed on this tank.

Improved assembly is generally a better choice, since it can stack with sandbag armour. With 6% sandbag armour and improved assembly, AMX 54 tank has 2800 HP. With both sandbag armour provisions and improved assembly, it has 2875 HP. This is very high HP and is very good for trading damage and surviving for longer in the battle.

Vertical Stabilizer:
The AMX M4 54 is a frontline brawler heavy tank. Due to this playstyle, having good gun handling is a lot more important than having good dispersion. Vertical stabilizer improves the tank’s on-movement accuracy, which is a lot more useful on a frontline tank like this.

Gameplay advice

The AMX M4 54 is a fairly unique tank in tier 10, as it combines good armour profile with quite good speed and mobility, giving it a different style of gameplay which sets it apart from other tanks in its tier.

General gameplay:
The AMX M4 54 needs to be played on the heavy tank side of the map. Its armour won’t really work as well on the medium flank, where the enemies are more accurate and the gameplay is more fast paced. The AMX M4 54 does better where the gameplay is slower paced, like on the heavy flank.

Use hulldown positions wherever possible, and avoid sidescraping the tank due to the weak hull shoulders. Try to use alpha damage to trade against tanks with 440 alpha or less, but use DPM to trade against tanks with 460 alpha or more. The AMX 54 has a pretty decent reload rate, so against higher alpha tanks, you can quite often put in 2 shots for every one the enemy shoots.

Try to always keep the hull faced to the enemy, since only the frontal armour is strong. The sides are long and fairly weak, so if the tank is angled or turned, it makes it easy for enemies to penetrate. Also generally try to avoid facehugging enemies, since they can shoot down on your upper plate using premium ammo.

Hide the lower plate.
When facing an AMX M4 54 from the front, there are 3 penetrable areas, one is the lower plate, the other are the 2 hatches on the roof. The lower plate is the largest and easiest weakpoint to hit, so always try to hide this in battle. The upper plate is extremely strong to all enemy HT, MT, and LT, even on flat ground only 340mm+ can go through (if using enhanced armour then 350mm+).

Hiding this makes the tank much harder to deal with, and enemies will either bounce off, or have to take time to aim for the hatches.

Hide the left side hatch.
Its the larger of the 2 hatches and it can be fairly easily hidden by raising your gun to the upper right side of your screen (from player perspective). It will take trial and error to get correct, but is a huge advantage to keeping HP in battles.
There is no need to hide the hatch with your gun in a facehug situation unless the enemy tank is at least the same height as your tank (AMX M4 54 is a very tall tank so there aren’t many). Due to the hatches being at the rear of the turret, shorter tanks won’t even be able to see it, instead its more likely they will try to penetrate the hull with premium ammo, in which case you should try put your gun in front of theirs to block their shot into the hull.

Use gun depression.
Alternatively, using gun depression fulfils both of the above pieces of advice. Using the full -8 gun depression on a hill or ridge will increase the upper plate armour to a point where even TD premium ammo can’t penetrate, it will hide the lower plate, and both hatches will become hidden as they are far back on the turret. The AMX M4 54 is one of the few tanks in tier 10 that is fully invincible when using gun depression. However, don’t just sit in the open to test this, as you may still get shot by well-aimed HE or from a hidden TD at the back.

Try to avoid sidescraping.
Due to having weak shoulder armour, the AMX M4 54 cant sidescrape without showing this weakpoint. You can sidescrape and only show the rear of the tank (to try to bait a shot from enemies), or you can just expose the front plates around a corner at a sharp angle to try and get enemies to shoot. Either way, the AMX M4 54’s armour is not meant to be angled or sidescraped, as it has very venerable weakpoints when it does.

Generally the AMX 54 just plays a frontline brawling role, due to its good armour and decent mobility. Its a fairly standard playstyle where you just need to point the armour and the gun to the enemy and shoot. No special angling or anything. Going hulldown makes the armour really hard to deal with, and even stronger if using gun depression as well.

Tank gameplay:

Overall

Armour – 7.5/10
Gun – 6/10
Mobility – 6.5/10
Speed – 8/10

AMX M4 54 is overall a good tank.

Armour is good. The upper plate is very strong, lower plate is decent, and turret is impenetrable, but has 2 cupolas. Not angle/sidescrape usable, HE protection is very good, HESH protection is poor.
Gun is decent. Penetration is good, 450 alpha is comfortable, base aim time is good, & 10s reload is pretty decent. DPM is fairly mediocre, gun handling and dispersion both unimpressive. -8 Gun depression is good.
Mobility is decent. On hard terrain its very good, with high acceleration rate and traverse speed. On medium terrain its mediocre, with decent acceleration rate, but mediocre traverse speed. Reverse speed is very good for a HT.
Speed is very good, at 45km/h.

Is it worth getting?

AMX M4 54 is not a tank everyone will love. Some players hate it’s fairly low DPM, it’s deceptive mobility, or it’s mediocre accuracy. For these players its not worth it. However if you like relatively mobile yet well armoured tanks, or want a tank with high HP and decent speed, the AMX M4 54 fits those criteria.

The AMX M4 54 is worth 19,000 gold, it’s a good tank with some enjoyable traits. Its overall combination of stats make it a fairly unique version of an all-rounder heavy, with a bit of a difference with that 2800 HP. Its not too difficult to play, due to its fairly simple armour layout and forgiving 2.8k hitpoints.

Historical Note:

The AMX M4 Mle.1954 is a fake tank. However, it is made of two parts of two real tanks, with the hull of the AMX M4 Mle. 1949 and the turret of the AMX 50 B TCB.

As France kept developing AMX M4 tank though the year 1949, it gradually took on an oscillating turret and an autoloader, this project then became the AMX 50 100, and that marks the end of the AMX M4 project.
If you look at the AMX 50 100 hull in game, you will notice that visually, it is nearly identical to the hull of the AMX M4 54.

The hull that the AMX M4 54 is based on was one of the planned variations of the AMX M4 49, it was to have a 280mm front plate with an additional 80mm on top of it to enhance the armour. This would have made its upper plate 360mm nominal thickness, with angling it would have been 598.19mm. The AMX 50 TCB turret armour is unknown, so the in-game armour values are made by WG for balancing.

The AMX M4 54 is a “what if” from Wargaming. “What if France had kept developing the AMX M4 alongside the AMX 50? Eventually the AMX 50 TCB turret would be developed, and it may have been mounted on both the  AMX M4 and the AMX 50.”
The tank is fake, from an alternate Wargaming universe, filled with continuous tank development.
