Armour
(The AT 15A in the images is using Enhanced Armour)

vs 228mm APCR
When flat and facing head-on:
Upper plate 175-210mm
Lower plate 240-380mm
Upper superstructure 230-280mm (areas left and right of the gun)
Cupola 152mm
228mm APCR resembles tier 7 heavy tank premium penetration. Tier 7 mediums and lights generally have less (190-210mm), and some exceptional tanks have 240-250mm penetration (however, these are quite few, and even they still struggle against the armour).
Using -10 gun depression
The tank does have -10 gun depression, but as the armour is already all red on flat ground, there isn’t any image. The armour would increase to:
Upper plate 305-440mm
Upper superstructure 240-400mm (these are the areas left and right of the gun)
Cupola 155-245mm
VS tier 6:
Against tier 6 enemies, the AT 15A has essentially no weakpoints. Even the cupola is thicker than the penetration of most tanks in tier 6, and this goes for the side armour as well, as its also 152mm thick.
The only way for most tier 6 tanks to reliably penetrate the AT 15A frontally is to load premium ammunition and aim for the cupolas on top. Alternatively, flanking to the rear of the tank also works. Shooting its side is rather pointless, as if you can penetrate its side, then you can penetrate the cupola.
VS tier 7:
Tier 7 tanks will be able to penetrate the frontal weakpoints. Medium and light tanks can aim for the cupolas, and heavies can additionally aim for the armour bar above the gun, or the lower part of the upper plate.
Again, other than these weakpoints, even the premium ammo of most tier 7 tanks won’t be enough to penetrate any other areas of this tank.
If faced with higher penetration tier 7 tanks (such as Smasher with 250-275mm HEAT), you should angle the tank. The easiest areas to penetrate with premium ammo are the large flat plates to the left and right of the gun, angling the hull not only decreases their size profile, but also increases the armour.
VS tier 8:
The majority of tier 8 tanks (using standard ammo) will see the exact same as the tier 7 tanks. They can penetrate the weakpoints, the cupolas, upper armour bar, and lower part of the upper plate. However their standard ammo won’t suffice for penetrating the majority of the AT 15A’s front. (Exceptions exist, such as the high penetration T34, Emil 1951, Somua SM, AMX M4 49, etc. Though, with angling and enhanced armour, even these tanks will struggle against the armour.)
Against premium ammunition though, most tanks will have no problem penetrating the armour of the AT 15A. Angling can help, but as tier 8 tanks have such good premium penetration (most have 20-40mm more than AT 15A’s armour thickness), most shots will still penetrate.
As tier 8 is a higher tier, its already impressive that the AT 15A can even bounce their standard ammunition.
Lesser known weakpoints of this tank are the upper armour bar, the right side cupola, and the gun itself.
-The upper armour bar is the flat bar along the whole top of the tank, its directly under the cupolas and is only 180mm thick.
-The right side cupola is less obvious as its smaller than the left, this weakpoint is only 130mm thick.
-Directly above and below the gun is a small area which is just 100mm thick. This is a hard shot to hit though as you have to fire between the gap in the gun mantlet to penetrate.
Gun
The AT 15A mounts an 17pdr (76.2mm) gun
-Alpha damage is 200 on AP, 175 on APCR, and 270 on HE
-It has a 3.5s reload, giving it 3393 DPM
-Penetration on AP is 171mm, APCR is 239mm, and HE is 20mm.
–Estimated aim time is 3.6/3.9s
-Dispersion is 0.290/0.261
–Gun handling is 0.36/0.36/0.16, or 0.31/0.31/0.14 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -10 degrees
-Gun arc left/right is +25/-25, which is extremely flexible and allows the tank to aim around corners easily.
Overall this is a great gun, its DPM is extremely high, the best in tier 7, aim time is quick, accuracy is great, alpha is decent, and the gun is extremely flexible even without a turret.
Though the gun handling may look poor, it really doesn’t feel that way. The very low speed of the tank and its great accuracy mean that the gun is actually unable to bloom out that much, and when the tank does stop to aim the quick base aim time means you don’t have to aim long at all to be very accurate.
Mobility
-Top speed is 20km/h forwards, and -10km/h in reverse
-Traverse speed is 33.2 deg/s on hard terrain, and 28.8 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 11.7 hp/t, it has a fairly weak 760 horsepower engine for its 65 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration rate is 9 hp/t on hard terrain, and 7.8 hp/t on medium terrain.
–Terrain resistances are quite average for an assault TD, with 1.3/1.5/2
Overall this mobility is decent enough, especially considering how much armour the tank has. Though the top speed is low, the AT 15A is almost always at this top speed (unless going uphill), the acceleration rate isn’t great, but it doesn’t need to be as the top speed is low.
What’s quite nice is the traverse speed, as the tank is able to turn itself around at a decent rate, and when coupled with the amazing gun arc, it makes it quite a flexible tank in terms of turning.
Equipment, provisions, & consumables
The AT 15A does not have any special provisions or consumables.
Gun Rammer:
The AT 15A already has great penetration, especially on its premium rounds; and as it carries no HEAT ammunition it just doesn’t benefit from calibrated shells.
The AT 15A is a DPM focused tank, so gun rammer is a far better equipment choice on this tank. Gun rammer will decrease the reload from 3.8s to 3.5s, and increase the DPM from 3156 to 3393.
Enhanced Armour:
As the AT 15A is a heavily armoured assault TD, it gains a huge benefit from using enhanced armour.
Enhanced armour will improve the (weakest point) upper plate from 175 to 182mm, lower plate from 240 to 250mm, upper superstructure from 230 to 240mm, and cupola from 152 to 159mm.
This armour increase can allow you to bounce even the highest penetration tier 7 tanks with 240-250mm premium penetration.
Improved assembly isn’t needed at all, as its base 1200 HP is already very good for a TD, better than even some tier 8 TDs.
Vertical Stabilizer:
As the AT 15A is a frontline assault tank, it does not need to improve its accuracy, as it won’t be fighting at long distance. The tank also already has great base accuracy, so refined gun is just useless on the AT 15A.
The AT 15A has some of the worst gun stabilization in game, though it won’t be very noticeable in battle, its still imperative to use the vertical stabilizer equipment. Using this will mean that on movement and turning, your gun will be able to get accurate much quicker, as it just won’t bloom out as much.
Gameplay advice
Much like the Tortoise or Turtle Mk.I, the AT 15A is a tank where you never stop pressing forward. Its an assault tank with armour with even higher tier tanks can struggle against, and has the highest DPM in the tier, what’s there to be scared of?
As its an assault TD, always go to the heavy tank. Assault TDs always do far better when they are facing against slower tanks with a more static and less active gameplay. Facing heavies also means that your DPM advantage is larger, and you have heavies on your team to support your pushes.
Try to avoid going to the MT flank. Even if you only have 1 tank for support on the HT side, generally you can still do very well, as your tank is very capable of holding its ground and dishing out damage.
Facing medium and light tanks on the MT side of the map generally won’t work out. The enemies will be faster and more accurate, though they will have less penetration, they could aim for your weakpoints or just flank around your tank.
AT 15A needs time-on-target to get its damage out effectively. Heavy tanks generally give more time on target as they are slower, less accurate, and have more HP, these factors often mean they are willing to trade HP or damage much more often than a medium. You also can’t push onto a medium as easily or confidently, as there’s a high possibility that they just take advantage of your slow/turretless tank and circle around it.
Use gun depression:
The AT 15A has a very nice -10 degrees of gun depression, and this allows it to be very flexible in any situation.
Using this gun depression will remove the weak bar on the very front of the upper plate, and the large cupola will be harder to hit. It also adds about 10mm thickness to the upper superstructure, making the tank overall just even harder to penetrate.
Angle the tank:
Always keep the tank angled to your enemies. There is no additional weakpoint that is shown when the tank angles, so you should always use this to make your armour stronger.
When angling to the full 25 degree extent of the gun arc, other than the cupolas, your weakest point of armour is 190mm on the upper plate. The track wheel is over 280mm, and the upper superstructure is mainly over 245mm thick.
The AT 15A also has extremely strong side armour at 152mm thick, so you can even over-angle and still bounce quite a few shots.
Keep buildings on your right:
The larger cupola is on the right (player perspective) of the tank, and so having a building on your right means you can easily cover this cupola behind the building, and use the great gun arc to still be able to shoot enemies. As the AT 15A’s lower plate is so strong, there is no issue with doing this.
Its not always feasible to have a building on your right, as sometimes there is just not any cover there, or you have a wrong spawn for doing so. This is not essential to gameplay so don’t make bad plays just to have a building on your right, the tank’s armour still works even without cover.
Play aggressively:
Know your tank’s strengths, DPM and armour. Don’t camp, don’t be afraid of enemies, play with aggression and encourage your allies to push enemies with you.
Don’t be scared of taking hits, if you play like this you will never do well in this tank. Play aggressively, use your fast reload and high DPM to put in multiple shots for every time the enemy shoots.
If you see an enemy aiming for a weakpoint, try to put your gun in the way, or just use angling to keep the weakpoint hidden.
Don’t stop moving:
Your speed is too low to allow you time to stop moving. Always press forward until you reach an engagement. Whether its the frontline or just an enemy tank to shoot, don’t stop moving till you get there. If there’s some random long range shot on a moving enemy that’s far away, don’t stop and shoot them. Your alpha damage isn’t high enough to justify it, and it wastes time, time that you should be using to push the enemies back.
Basically just play as a heavy, use gun depression, angle the tank, trade with DPM, never play passively and always be ready to push the enemies aggressively.
Overall
Overall the AT 15A is a strong tank but with a niche style of gameplay. Unlike the Turtle Mk.I, Tortoise, or Badger, which have quite comfortable damage per shot, the AT 15A’s gun deals a particularly low amount for a TD, at 200 per shot. It does give the tank quite a different feel, even though its quite similar in all other areas (especially to the Tortoise).
The tank has very strong armour for its tier, and is even able to reliably bounce tier 8 enemies (given that they don’t hit the weakpoints or use premium ammo). The gun is amazing, with great accuracy, aim time, and the best DPM in tier 7. The tank has a limited top speed and quite a weak engine, however it has decent traverse speed with very flexible gun arc angles.
Is it worth getting?
The AT 15A is worth getting if you are a player who absolutely loves the assault TD gameplay style. It has all the factors it needs to make it a perfect tank in this role.
The tank is not worth it if you don’t think that you will enjoy assault TDs. If you are unsure, you can have a trial run by playing the AT 2, AT 8, or Tortoise, which are free and in the tech tree. These tanks have near identical characteristics for their respective tiers.
The tier 8 AT 15 is not the best representative of this gameplay style, as it has basically the same armour as this tank, but 1 tier higher.
The tier 7 AT 7 is also not the best representative, as its armour is just 30mm weaker than the AT 15A.
This tank is quite new player friendly, as its armour just works, even if you over-angle or show the side, it can still bounce. The gun is just so easy to use and the gun angles make it easy to position the tank.
Its worth it if you like assault TDs or high DPM tanks, but its not worth it if you don’t like that playstyle.
The AT 15A is worth 4,000 gold. Its a good tank, its easy to use, and if you like the playstyle its quite fun to play. Though it is quite a niche tank, and there are definitely players who won’t enjoy what the tank offers, even though the tank is quite strong.
