Armour

(The Herdbreaker in the images is using Improved Assembly)

Drag slider right -> to view 240mm AP
Drag slider <- left to view 300mm HEAT

Armour when facing head on:
Upper plate  320-330mm
Lower plate 165-350mm

Turret cheeks 390-500mm
Weakpoints next to mantlet 270mm
Gun mantlet 320mm+
Cupola 125-295mm

vs 225mm AP (top image), 265mm APCR (bottom image)
Using -10 gun depression:

Upper plate  480mm
Turret cheeks 440-800mm
Weakpoints next to mantlet 260mm
Gun mantlet 350mm
Cupola 115-320mm

Side armour:
The side armour of this tank ranges from 30-60mm, generally its quite unreliable and not great, even though it is angled in a <> shape similar to the tier 10 M60, its just much thinner and less likely to bounce.

Armour vs all tier 8-10 enemies:
Facing all enemies you encounter in tier 8-10, the turret is very strong, essentially impenetrable, and the same goes for the upper area of the lower plate.

The cupola will be penetrable right in the center area to all tanks, and if enemies have 300mm+ of premium penetration, they can also penetrate the flat area on the cupola.

The upper plate is penetrable to tier 9-10 tanks using premium ammo, similar to the M60’s upper plate but slightly stronger.

The small weakpoints on the bottom left/right of the gun mantlet are penetrable to tier 8 HT with high premium penetration, and all tier 9-10s with premium ammo.

Gun

The Herdbreaker mounts a 105mm gun.

Firepower:
-Ammo: AP/HEAT/HE.
-Penetration: 231/295/70mm
-Alpha damage: 360/310/460.
-Reload time is 7.2s for 2989 DPM.

Handling:
Estimated aim time is 3.3/3.5s
Base aim time is 2.35s, but it can get down to 1.82s
-Dispersion is 0.321/0.273
Gun handling is 0.12/0.1/0.1, or 0.1/0.09/0.09 with Vertical Stabilizer.

Usability:
-Shell velocities are 880/1200/750 m/s.
-Gun depression is -10 degrees around the entire tank, except the rear where its -2.7.

Overall this is a great gun in most areas. It has good alpha damage, 360 being the highest of the 100-105mm caliber guns, while also having great DPM at nearly 3k. Standard penetration is quite average, but HEAT & HE penetration are both good.

In terms of accuracy the aim time is slow for a medium and it is noticeable, however the great gun handling & accuracy make this tank still very accurate without needing to aim too long. Gun depression is also great at -10, a definite advantage if you’re used to the tier 10 M48 Patton.

Mobility

Raw stats:
-Forward speed is 45km/h.
-Reverse speed is -17km/h.
-Raw acceleration rate is 17.7 hp/t.
-Engine power is 969hp for its 55 ton weight.

Hard terrain mobility:
-Actual acceleration is 17.7 hp/t.
-Traverse speed is 56.6 deg/s.

Medium terrain mobility:
-Actual acceleration is 13.7 hp/t.
-Traverse speed is 43.5 deg/s.

Terrain resistance stats:
Terrain resistances are 1/1.3/1.55

Overall this is quite bad mobility for a medium tank, especially up at the standards of tier 9-10. The tank isn’t slow like a heavy tank, but its noticeably slower than other medium tanks when on medium terrain. The mobility on hard terrain is decent, but the difference when on medium terrain is noticeable.

Equipment, Consumables, & Provisions

Tungsten shells:
Use this in your loadout, as it increases the average damage per shot to 414 on AP, which is very useful for trading damage or ensuring kills on tanks with 360-410 HP.
Tungsten shells is the only special consumable/provision on this tank.

Gun Rammer:
The Herdbreaker has average to good penetration on all of its ammo, and generally doesn’t struggle to deal with enemy armour unless constantly fighting heavies. Using gun rammer maximizes on the great DPM & alpha combination that this tank has.

Gun rammer improves reload time from 7.6s to 7.2s, and increase DPM from 2839 to 2989.

Improved Assembly/Enhanced Armour:
Either can work.

The tank’s lower plate and turret are already so strong to the point where they don’t need improving (as nothing other than extremely high penetration TDs even have a chance to penetrate). Enhanced armour would mainly be used for the slight improvement it adds to the turret cheek weakpoint, the cupola, and the upper plate (all against premium ammo, as standard ammo can’t contest these areas anyway).

As the armour on most areas of the tank don’t need improving, improved assembly can also work, increasing the HP from 1670 to 1737.

Refined Gun:
Due to its slow aim time, great gun handling, and great dispersion, refined gun works well on this tank.

Vertical stabilizer doesn’t seem to help as much on this tank, as the main issue with its 3 accuracy-related stats is the aim time, improving its already great gun handling doesn’t really give a noticeable effect.

Refined gun works better as it maximises on the gun’s accuracy, reducing dispersion from 0.321 to 0.273, meaning generally you can just snap shots in without needing to take much time to aim anyway.

Gameplay advice

Overall gameplay of the Herdbreaker is that of a hulldown/brawler medium tank.

General gameplay:
Overall the Herdbreaker just plays as a typical hulldown medium. Try to go to areas of the map where you can use gun depression or go hulldown to hide the lower plate. One of the main strengths of the Herdbreaker is its great armour profile, and using gun depression helps to both hide the lower plate, but also make the cupola a bit stronger to premium ammo.

Be wary when you do face a player with good aim who goes for the cupola, don’t continue to give them shots into it if you notice they have good aim and knowledge of weakspots.

Despite a lower level of mobility compared to other mediums, it doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t flank. This tank can still flank well, as long as it doesn’t have to be very fast. The gun is a proper MT gun, which makes it very effective if you can get to the side or rear of the main enemy team.

Cupola:
Note that the cupola of this tank is mostly strong, only the very center area is really weak.

Often if you move back and fourth while hulldown, it will help to make this small area harder to hit, alternatively you can try to use the gun to shots when you see enemies aiming for it.

If facing an enemy who is constantly able to penetrate the cupola, don’t continuously poke over a ridge and give them free shots into it (sometimes players won’t bother to aim for it/wont bother to load gold).

Stay on hard terrain:
Herdbreaker is among the slowest medium tanks in tier 9, a main reason for this is its unimpressive performance on medium terrain.

Try stay on hard terrain, which are roads, paths, or generally any paved/concreted area. This will significantly boost your mobility and can be really important if you want to reach positions quickly.

Snap shots:
Due to having slow aim time, but great dispersion and gun handling, you don’t need to fully aim all of your shots.

Often times the gun is accurate to take a shot on an enemy with almost no time spent aiming, especially at mid-ranges or if you are fighting lightly armoured enemies. If aiming for small weakpoints you should aim a bit more carefully.

Use consumables:
Use the consumables this tank has for brawling situations. The strong armour of the tank combined with great DPM & base alpha damage make its combination of tungsten shells and adrenaline a great combination.

Activating tungsten shells increases your average damage roll from 360 up to 414, which lets you trade with enemies well. If you also activate adrenaline at the same time, your reload time decreases to 6.2s, giving you 4021 DPM.

Ram:
Weighing almost 55 tons, the Herdbreaker is one of the best tier 9 mediums to ram with (just avoid the E 50s and the FVE Defender). If you can build up enough speed and find another medium or light tank (or even lighter heavies such as T95E6 or Kranvagn), you can ram them and deal a decent amount of damage.

Overall the Herdbreaker just plays the role of a hulldown medium tank, using gun depression and good armour to hold positions and bounce shots, relying less on speed and flanking.

Overall

Armour – 7/10
Gun – 7/10
Mobility – 4/10
Speed – 4/10

Herdbreaker is overall a great tank.

Armour is very solid for a medium, with a great upper plate, lower plate, and turret. The cupola is somewhat troll but still a weakpoint.
Gun is great, high DPM, good alpha, great gun handling, and comfortable -10 gun depression.
Mobility is unimpressive, fairly slow on medium terrain, and below average on hard terrain.
Speed is also mediocre at 45km/h.

Is it worth getting?

If you really enjoy hulldown or brawling medium tank gameplay then yes its worth getting. However, outside of this its not really anything special, as its gameplay feel is just like an M48 or M60, but a bit slower and more heavily armoured.

The Herdbreaker is worth 12,000 gold. Its a great tank, however its gameplay isn’t anything too unique or exciting.
