The LEY-1 Defender is a tier 8 Hybrid nation light tank. Its main unique feature is the gun, which is an 8 shell burst autoloader with only a 0.10s intra-clip. For a light tank it deals high damage and has troll armour.

Armour performance:

Strong areas:
-The majority of the upper plate & turret are auto-ricochet angles, so can bounce AP & APCR shells, up to 120mm guns on the hull, and 90mm guns on the turret (larger guns than this can overmatch).

-The entire front of the LEY-1 is well protected against HESH & HE due to spaced armour & angling.
The only penetrable areas are under the gun, the upper plate center, and the very edges of the lower plate.

Main weakpoints:
-The entire tank is very weak to HEAT ammo (220mm+) frontally, due to armour relying on auto-ricochet angles.
-The center of the upper plate, the center of the gun, and the center of the lower plate are all weak to AP & APCR, as these areas are not auto-ricochet.

Usability:
-Shell velocities: 1300/1100/800 m/s.
-Gun depression is -8 degrees around the entire tank.

Overall this gun is decent. Its burst damage is high for a LT, with a pretty good reload time of 10s. Standard and HE penetration are both low, but the HEAT penetration is good. Despite the accuracy and aim time being fairly unimpressive, the gun is still relatively consistent up to mid-range fights thanks to the fast intra-clip, high shell velocity, and incredible after-shot-dispersion.

Despite a high burst damage of 400 in 0.70s, which is very good for a LT, since its delivering this damage over 8 shots, there’s a high chance of doing 250-300 damage in many cases. Unless an enemy’s armour is 100% penetrable, and you’re in fairly close range, don’t expect all 8 shots to hit (at least not most of the time).

Mobility

Raw stats:
-Forward speed is 64km/h.
-Reverse speed is -25km/h.
-Raw acceleration rate is 25.7 hp/t.
-Engine power is 592hp for its 23 ton weight.
–Terrain resistances are 0.8/0.8/1.2

Hard & medium terrain mobility:
-Actual acceleration is 32.1 hp/t.
-Traverse speed is 68.5 deg/s.

The mobility of this tank is better than it seems on paper.

While top speed, acceleration, and traverse speed are all fairly average for a tier 8 LT, the LEY-1 Defender doesn’t lose ANY of its mobility performance when going off road. It is the only tank in the entire game which does this, and means that its mobility performance overall is among the best of tier 8, as it stays just as fast when going off road.

Equipment, Consumables, & Provisions

Calibrated Shells:
This is essential for the LEY-1, since it has low standard penetration, and it fires so many shells so fast, you can’t always rely on them hitting an enemy’s weakest point.
The higher penetration of Calibrated Shells will help the gun to get as much damage as possible out of a single burst.

Example: If you’re aiming at a lower plate, some may hit the upper plate. If aiming for the center of an enemy cupola, some may hit the edge.

Improved Assembly:
The LEY-1 Defender has pretty troll armour, however that’s only due to auto-ricochet angles, so enhanced armour doesn’t help this tank at all.

Improved assembly would increase the HP of this tank from 1250 to 1313.

Vertical Stabilizer:
Vertical stabilizer is very useful on this tank as its almost always moving around and relocating on the battlefield. It also has very bad dispersion when turning of 0.16, which causes the gun to bloom massively.
With the already fairly inconsistent penetration chance due to having many shells, vertical stabilizer is vital to improve the gun’s performance, especially as this is a LT.

Gameplay advice

Gameplay of the LEY-1 Defender is quite unique for a light tank. Its definitely a “support” type of LT, with gameplay more similar to a T49 than any other light tank, due to its relatively inconsistent damage and low penetration.

General gameplay:
The LEY-1 is definitely a support LT, it differs from normal LT with how its able to take on enemies and deal damage, often having to play much more cautiously due to its inconsistent damage and longer 10s reload.

For the most part, the LEY-1 deals damage kind of like a T49, by using its camo rating to stay hidden and take up positions on the sides of enemies, and then waiting until enemies shoot or aren’t paying attention before shooting a burst.
Always retreat immediately after shooting a burst, since you have a 10s reload, it means by the time your magazine is reloaded, your camo will have reset and you will be unspotted.

Use the mobility and camo rating to get around the map, stay hidden, and to get shots on enemies. The gun works best when shooting large and flat armour plates as there’s less chance of a miss or bounce, which is why flanking and using camo (like a T49) works better for this tank compared to the normal gameplay of other LT.

Armour reliability:
While the LEY-1 has some armour, enough to be “pretty good” for a light tank, its still not reliable. The tank can be penetrated on the center of the upper plate, the entire lower plate, and around the gun.
Its still better to play the tank as though it has no armour, but you can take advantage of the narrow and troll turret by going hulldown and moving back and fourth along the ridge.

Maximizing the 8 shot burst;
To try and hit as many shots as possible in the burst, try to aim for flatter areas of armour, since if enemies move or turn, the flat area is less likely to generate odd angles for bounces.

Sometimes its better to use HEAT, as it does a 320 damage burst with much higher penetration than AP, and at longer range its often more consistent against medium-armour vehicles.

Don’t use HE:
Just like the FVE Defender, LEY-1 has terrible HE, its damage hardly increases while having a very low chance of full penetration.

HE burst damage is 480, compared to 400 on AP.
If you miss or bounce 2 shots out of 8 (which is not uncommon), you’ll be doing less damage than AP, so using HE just isn’t worth it.

Also worth noting that due to being a burst gun with very low module damage, HE does not deal splash damage on non-penetrating shots.

The LEY-1 Defender is overall a decent tank.

Is it worth getting?

The LEY-I Defender is worth getting if you want a unique and different light tank. Its one of the few “support” light tanks in game due to its higher damage and fairly inconsistent damage range (kind of like a T49), which makes it play fairly different to most other LT.

Its also worth considering it for gravity force, since it has high shell velocity and shots so many shells so fast, it makes it similar to the FVE Defender for ramming tanks by using your gun’s burst.

The LEY-1 is worth 7,000 gold. Just like FVE Defender, this value is mainly for the unique/fun factor, as the LEY-1’s gun is so different to other tanks. Its still a decent light tank at its tier and can perform well in battles.
