Mutant

Mutant is a tier 7 hybrid nation medium tank. It features very high alpha damage for a medium tank, and has pretty good armour for its class. Mutant is the least mobile tier 7 medium tank, with very poor acceleration, traverse, and terrain resistance differences.

Armour

(The Mutant in the images is using Enhanced Armour)

Drag slider right -> to view 155mm AP
Drag slider <- left to view 194mm APCR

When flat and facing head-on:
Flat upper plate 155mm
Round plate in center 208mm
Lower plate 77mm

Gun mantlet 140-200mm
Turret cheeks 190-370mm
Cupola 60-200mm+

Side armour:
Side armour is 68mm and is completely flat, this is quite good for a tier 7 medium tank, however there’s no spaced armour.

Armour vs tier 6 tanks:
Against tier 6 enemies, the Mutant actually has pretty strong armour, its turret is largely impenetrable except for the small gun mantlet weakpoint and cupola weakpoints, and the upper plate can bounce nearly all standard ammo if slightly angled. Even when not angled, it will still bounce most tier 6 standard ammo.

The lower plate is weak to all enemies, and KV-2s can HE through it if using calibrated shells.

Armour vs tier 7 tanks:
The Mutant still has decent armour in tier 7, as most MT and LT have the same level of penetration as tier 6 HT.

Using enhanced armour will greatly help the Mutant’s armour effectiveness in tier 7, making it much easier to bounce enemy medium & light tanks on the upper plate. If not using this, then enemy MT with around 155-160mm+ AP penetration can penetrate the Mutant’s upper plate when its not angled.

Since tier 7 HT have higher penetration than MT, they won’t struggle to penetrate the Mutant’s upper plate, though the turret will still be somewhat troll.

The round plate on the center of the armour is thicker than the rest of the upper plate, so you can still sometimes get random bounces, even if enemies have enough penetration to easily go through your upper plate.

Armour vs tier 8 tanks:
Against tier 8 enemies the Mutant doesn’t have much armour. There’s a chance you’ll still get bounces on the well angled areas of the tank, but most of it will be easily penetrated by tier 8 tanks.

Gun

The Mutant mounts a 140mm gun

-Alpha damage is 470 on AP, 400 on HEAT, and 580 on HE
-It has a 15.3s reload, giving it 1,850 DPM
-Penetration on  AP is 148mm, HEAT is 196mm, and HE is 46mm.
Estimated aim time is 4.7/4.4s
Base aim time is 2.3s, but it can get down to 1.87s.
-Dispersion is 0.380/0.342
Gun handling is 0.2/0.2/0.2, or 0.17/0.17/0.17 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -6 degrees.

Overall this is an alright gun. Its not terrible nor amazing. It has very high alpha damage, the highest in tier 7 after the 640 alpha and 530 alpha guns. Considering this, it has great aim time (relative to its alpha), which is noticeable in battle, once you stop you can get aimed in at a decent rate (unlike a T49). Dispersion is also pretty good for this level of alpha damage. Gun handling is terrible for a medium tank, but considering its heavy-like gun, the gun handling is fairly ok.

Some things to note are the AP shell, which allow this gun to easily hit and penetrate many enemies (unlike a T49 again), its a very versatile shell and is essentially OP for derp guns. HE has terrible penetration for the 140mm caliber, but its still usable in battle (shown used in the video below).

(Author note: One thing I noticed when playing is that tracks eat this tank’s shells very often, even on tanks with fairly weak side armour, so try to avoid shooting tracks at an angle if possible.)

Mobility

-Top speed is 47km/h forwards, and -18km/h in reverse.
-Traverse speed is 47.6 deg/s on hard terrain, and 36.6 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 19.1 hp/t, it has a good 759 horsepower engine for its 40 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration rate is 19.1 hp/t on hard terrain, and 14.7 hp/t on medium terrain.
Terrain resistances are 1/1.3/1.5

Overall this is very poor mobility for a medium tank. Its mobility on hard terrain is decent, though the traverse speed isn’t great, and the top speed forward and reverses are both slightly below average.

On medium terrain the mobility is terrible, it accelerates slowly, has bad traverse speed, and generally cruises around at 38-42km/h. Due to this its best to try stay on hard terrain.

Equipment, provisions, & consumables

The Mutant has no special provisions or consumables.

Gun Rammer:
Calibrated shells generally are not needed on this tank, as its primary ammo is its AP shell, unlike T49 which uses both HEAT and premium HE often, Mutant only uses this one shell type for most scenarios).
Calibrated shells can work, since this isn’t a DPM-focused tank, however its really not needed, since the penetration isn’t below average for a tier 7 medium, and your AP shell allows you to be very versatile.

Use gun rammer to decrease the immense reload of the tank, gun rammer would lower the reload time 16.4s down to 15.3s, and increase the DPM from 1720 to 1850.

Enhanced Armour:
The Mutant’s armour is very flat, and its pretty good for a medium tank, Enhanced armour makes quite a noticeable difference on it. Enhanced armour is worth using, especially as bouncing more will let you trade with that 470 alpha even more effectively.

Enhanced armour improves:
-Flat upper plate from 155mm to 161mm.
-Round center plate from 208mm to 218mm.
-Lower plate form 77mm to 80mm.
-Turret armour also improves, most noticeable on turret cheeks.

This roughly 10mm improvement is most noticeable against tier 7 premium ammo, and tier 8 MT and HT with around 215mm AP penetration or less.

Image below:
Its slightly hard to tell due to PBR graphics, but Enhanced armour makes a noticeable difference on the upper plate for this level of penetration.
(Sorry for the wonky lining up of photos, was only given this tank less than 1 day before release, will likely correct later.)

This is vs 155mm AP penetration

Vertical Stabilizer:
Use vertical stabilizer since the Mutant has abysmal gun handling. 0.2/0.2/0.2 is bad even by heavy tank standards, and this is a medium. Refined gun isn’t needed as this tank doesn’t sit still and aim most of the time, it moves quite a lot, hence vertical stabilizer is more beneficial. Mutant also has a fairly decent 0.380 dispersion for its alpha, so refined gun really isn’t needed.

Gameplay advice

Mutant is a mix of the Chimera and T49’s gameplay, it has the high alpha and armoured traits of the Chimera, but with the ambush/support gameplay role of a T49. Since it has worse mobility than both, its quite a unique gameplay style, especially for tier 7.

General gameplay:
The Mutant is an ambush/support/damage trading medium. It uses the high alpha damage to out-trade even higher tier heavy tanks, but has to hide and play carefully due to its poor mobility and long reload.

Start the battle by going to the medium flank, this is where the armour will work the best, and your damage trading will be the most noticeable. After the Mutant’s 470 alpha, the next highest is only 290, so you can easily out-damage any enemies on the MT flank.

Try to keep with some allies, since 15s is one of the longest reload times in tiers 6-8, and enemies could easily rush you if you don’t have support (and your mobility is too poor to be able to escape).

Trade with alpha damage, the 470 alpha that you have on this tank is higher than the majority of tanks you face (even tier 8 heavy tanks). Try to avoid enemies as you reload, as nearly all will reload quicker than you and be able to out-DPM you on the long 15s reload.

Using the armour:
The Mutant does have usable armour. In most situations its best to try and angle slightly, as the upper plate does benefit from this, and its especially noticeable to enemies with around 155-165mm penetration (this penetration is all tier 6 tanks except TDs, and all tier 7 MT & LT).

Going hulldown does work but is slightly challenging, as the Mutant has a tall hull and quite poor -6 gun depression. Its lower plate is extremely weak, but its fairly narrow so its not too hard to hide with some cover.

Don’t always rely on the armour 100%, since there are weakpoints even to low penetration tanks, the left side of the gun mantlet (shooting PoV), the cupola, and bottom edges of turret cheeks.

Gun depression use:
Note that you don’t have good gun depression, unlike the -8 or -10 you’d be used to on most USA tanks like the T49 or T92E1, the Mutant only has -6 degrees over every area of its hull.

In gameplay this isn’t usually too much of a challenge, just avoid positions which require good gun depression, and try to use the terrain to your advantage. You can use the tall hull to peak over ridges or from behind cover without using too much gun depression, or you can reverse the tank against a hill to artificially increase gun depression.

Stay on hard terrain:
The Mutant has pretty poor mobility for a medium as it is, but by going off-road, you worsen this mobility even further. Keeping to hard terrain, which are paved areas, roads, paths, etc, will give you the best possible mobility in this tank.

Driving off-road just ruins the mobility and makes it the slowest tier 7 medium, which is non-ideal. Even though it does have armour to compensate for this, as a medium tank you still want to be able to use mobility easily in battle.
(Also note that on medium terrain its genuinely difficult to run away from heavy tanks since you barely have faster traverse and acceleration than many of them.)

Use HE where possible:
The HE penetration of the Mutant is quite bad, only 46mm (a 140mm gun should really have around 72-80mm of HE penetration), but it does do a good amount of damage at 580. It is still worth trying to use, since that increased alpha helps increase your damage score despite having a long reload.

46mm penetration can still penetrate the rear plates of a lot of enemies, so its not completely useless. Its also decent at doing splash damage against enemies which you can’t penetrate (such as a T26E4 or Fixer).

Overall the Mutant is supporting/ambush tank with high alpha. Its best to keep allies with you as your reload is long, but you can trade damage very well and use the armour decently while playing on the medium flank. Try to keep on roads and hard terrain, since your medium terrain mobility is poor.

Tank gameplay:

Overall

Armour – 6.5/10
Gun – 5/10
Mobility – 3.5/10
Speed – 4.5/10

Mutant is overall a good tank.

Armour is good for a medium, it can definitely bounce shots. The upper plate is fairly thick, the turret is well angled, and the lower plate is narrow (but extremely weak). There are multiple turret weakpoints, and HE protection is decent.
Gun has very high alpha damage, decent aim time and dispersion, and average penetration. Its DPM is low, and has poor gun handling for a MT. Gun depression is a relatively poor -6.
Mobility is poor, it has a decent engine, but with very poor medium terrain resistance, making it turn and accelerate very slowly on medium terrain. The mobility on hard terrain is decent. Reverse speed is mediocre at -18km/h.
Speed is slightly below average at 47km/h.

Is it worth getting?

The Mutant is basically a mix of 2 tank playstyles:
-One is the armoured and strong medium tank playstyle, such as a 122TM or Chimera, they have good armour big guns, and relatively decent accuracy.
-The other is the ambush support playstyle, such as the T49, where it thrives on dealing the huge alpha then hiding for its reload, and reappearing to ambush enemies again.

Since the Mutant combines the two, its quite unique, its also at tier 7, where there are no other “heavium” mediums, and there’s no derp light tank. In tier 7 the alpha damage is uncontested among mediums & lights, and even beats the majority of heavies, combined with usable armour its quite a fun and unique tank.

Its worth getting from a uniqueness and gameplay standpoint, as for how “good” it is in battle, its fairly competitive due to that huge alpha and armour, however its gameplay is unconventional and may be hard to get used to for some players.

The Mutant is worth 5,000 gold. Its a good tank which has a unique playstyle, and its quite fun. Its a breath of fresh air compared to the T49, as it actually has armour, AP shells, and decent accuracy. Its not recommended for newer players due to its long reload and bad gun depression, but should be enjoyable for all due to that alpha damage.
