When flat and facing head-on:
Upper plate 210-220mm
Lower plate 160mm
Turret cheeks 250-370mm+
Cupolas 170mm
Side armour:
80mm no spaced

vs 205mm AP (top image), 258mm APCR(bottom image)
Using -8 gun depression
Upper plate 305mm
Turret cheeks 265-600mm+
Side armour:
The Obj. 590 has 80mm of flat side armour, there are no sideskirts or spaced armour. This is pretty good side armour for a tier 8 medium, but its still best to avoid sidescraping due to the normalization effect on tracks.
Armour vs tier 7 tanks:
Against tier 7 tanks the Obj.590 has very good armour. Its upper plate can easily bounce the majority of tanks, most tanks would need premium ammo to penetrate the upper plate.
The turret side armour is even strong, as its 150mm thick, so many mediums will struggle if its not flat. The turret front will be essentially impenetrable except by the highest penetration heavy tanks or tank destroyers.
The lower plate is a weakpoint but the cupolas are quite strong against tier 7s.
Armour vs tier 8 tanks:
Facing tier 8 tanks, the upper plate will be weaker. Heavy tanks and medium tanks with over 195-200mm will be able to reliably penetrate the upper plate (depends on the equipment you’re using).
Many mediums (around 180-190mm penetration) will still really struggle to deal with the Obj. 590’s upper plate, but the lower plate is still a weakspot, and any tier 8 premium ammo can penetrate the upper plate on flat ground.
The turret is very resilient ahs will stand up to most tier 8 premium ammo as long as you don’t sit still. Its weakpoints are small and is very strong and rounded.
Armour vs tier 9 tanks:
Against tier 9 enemies, the Obj.590’s hull will be easily penetrated on flat ground and when its angled. The only chance to bounce off it is if you’re using the tank’s gun depression.
The turret armour is still strong to most tier 9 standard ammo, but tier 9 tanks have much higher penetration premium ammo, so most can penetrate the turret cheeks on flat ground. The turret is still strong when using gun depression, but rely on it less due to tier 9s having higher penetration.

Drag slider right -> to view 185mm AP
Drag slider <- left to view 240mm APCR
This is a “lower penetration level” tier 8 medium tank, most tier 7 heavy tanks also have around this penetration level. Against such tanks the strong upper plate is much more noticeable.
Gun
The Obj.590 mounts a 100mm gun
-Alpha damage is 280 on AP, 240 on HEAT, and 350 on HE
-It has a 7.4s reload, giving it 2,267 DPM
-Penetration on AP is 182mm, HEAT is 243mm, and HE is 50mm.
–Estimated aim time is 4.7/4.3s
–Base aim time is 3.0s, but it can get down to 2.45s.
-Dispersion is 0.335/0.301
–Gun handling is 0.1/0.12/0.06, or 0.09/0.1/0.05 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -8 degrees.
Overall this is an ok gun but nothing special at all. It has bad penetration, especially due to having HEAT as premium ammo; very poor aim time, the longest of any tier 8 medium tank; and fairly average accuracy and DPM.
The gun handling is very good, and even though the gun takes ages to aim, the great handling means it often doesn’t need that time to aim, and can just snap shots in fairly easily.
Gun depression is also uncharacteristically good for a Soviet medium tank, and its very good at using hulldown positions.
Mobility
-Top speed is 52km/h forwards, and -18km/h in reverse.
-Traverse speed is 58.4 deg/s on hard terrain, and 48.7 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 20.9 hp/t, it has a good 845 horsepower engine for its 40 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration rate is 20.9 hp/t on hard terrain, and 17.4 hp/t on medium terrain.
–Terrain resistances are 1/1.2/1.5
Overall this is good mobility, the top speed is decent, with good acceleration rate to reach it. Traverse speed isn’t anything impressive, but Obj.590 does have neutral traverse, which no similar USSR/Chinese MT have. Reverse speed isn’t great, but still decent.
Equipment, provisions, & consumables
The Obj.590 has no special provisions or consumables.
Gun Rammer/Calibrated Shells:
Either is a valid choice on this tank. Gun rammer will give you more competitive DPM and let you brawl better as against other mediums.
Calibrated shells will allow you to penetrate enemies more easily, which is actually needed more than on most other mediums, since when the Obj.590 does need to aim, its insanely long aim time makes it quite hard to snipe small weakpoints at long ranges. This is where better penetration is good, as it lets you “aim less”.
Use gun rammer to improve the reload of the tank, lowering the reload time from 8s down to 7.6s, and increase the DPM from 2109 to 2219.
Use calibrated shells to increase the penetration, from 182mm on to 197mm on AP, 243mm to 275mm on HEAT, and 50mm to 54mm on HE.
Enhanced Armour:
Just as with the Type 59, the Obj.590 has well angled armour and fairly strong armour. Enhanced armour is worth using to improve the angled upper plate and rounded turret.
Enhanced armour improves:
-Upper plate from 210mm to 217mm.
-Lower plate form 160mm to 168mm.
-Turret armour from 250mm to 265mm on the weakest point.
(There’s no image comparison due to enhanced armour equipment changing in the next update.)
Vertical Stabilizer/Refined Gun:
Either equipment choice can work well.
Vertical stabilizer will help make the gun’s snapshot ability even more impressive, and let you more easily hit shots without aiming (which is important due to how bad the aim time is).
Alternatively you could improve accuracy with refined gun, since the gun handling is already so good, vertical stabilizer can be dropped. Improving dispersion means your maximum aim circle size isn’t as big, an equally important factor for a gun with such terrible aim time, and also helps to improve the snapshot ability.
Gameplay advice
The Obj. 590’s gameplay should feel very familiar to most players. Its most similar to the Type 59, T-44, or Obj.274a type of tank, but could also be compared to the T-62A’s gameplay moved down to tier 8.
General gameplay:
Overall the Obj. 590 plays a generic medium tank role, using its good armour and mobility on the MT flank to brawl with enemy mediums and hold hulldown positions. Its gameplay is generic and should feel fairly familiar to most medium tank players.
Go to the medium side of the map, as this tank in particular is very awkward on the heavy flank (due to poor aim time, low penetration, unimpressive alpha). Try to use hulldown positions and make use of the armour wherever possible, other than this it just plays like a usual medium tank, flanking enemies and being active in the battle.
Angle the hull armour:
Angling the hull helps to increase the effectiveness of the upper plate. This will help to get more bounces, especially if the lower plate is hidden.
Wiggling the armour can also work, since enemies may be baited into hitting the tracks or just bounce of the upper plate when its turned.
Don’t always rely on the armour:
While Obj.590 does have quite a strong upper plate for a medium tank, you can’t rely on it in battle in most situations.
On flat ground, the lower plate is exposed, and its fairly easy for most tanks to hit, and for nearly all tanks to penetrate. The upper plate itself is penetrable all tier 8 HT and many tier 8 MT when its on flat ground.
The situations where you can and should rely on the armour are when hulldown and angling/using gun depression. The turret is very strong and the upper plate is very well angled, making the armour very effective in a hulldown position.
Use gun depression:
Gun depression is one of the Obj.590’s unique traits. -8 degrees combined with a thick and rounded turret makes it very effective at bouncing shots with its turrets but also much more flexible than any other Soviet/Chinese medium in terms of how it can use the terrain.
Don’t sit still while using gun depression, since this tank does have weakpoints which enemies can aim for. Keep moving slightly while hulldown, as it helps to throw off the enemies’ aim and make it more likely that they miss or bounce.
Aim or don’t aim:
This gun’s aim time is so long that in most situations you have to do one of two things:
1- Either commit to a snap-shot, don’t aim at all and just let the gun’s good handling work. This won’t always work out as sometimes RNG will cause your gun to hit a module or the ground (this happens in the gameplay video below at 00:23& 03:25), but often at close and even mid range you can just snap in shots without aiming at all due to such good gun handling.
(Often you may not want to aim, as the aim time is so long that even after waiting for it to aim in, sometimes the shots miss anyway, so its just time wasted.)
2- Commit to fully aiming and not rush shots. This is the complete opposite of snapping shots, since you have to sit still and let the gun aim in all the way until you are sure the shot will 100% hit/penetrate the enemy.
As said above, if you’re going to stop to aim, but not fully aim all the way, why stop at all? The aim time is so long that you can’t really afford to stop to aim and then just miss the shot. If you’re going to stop, aim all the way. If you just want to shoot fast, don’t bother aiming at all (load HEAT if you have to).
Overall the Object 590 plays similarly to other Soviet/Chinese mediums with 100mm guns, just with a bit more focus on its gun depression and armour as those are its special traits. Its a generic MT playstyle.
Tank gameplay:
Overall
Armour – 7.5/10
Gun – 5/10
Mobility – 5.5/10
Speed – 5.5/10
Obj. 590 is overall a decent/good tank.
Armour is good for a medium. The upper plate and turret are both strong. Lower plate is weak, side armour is good. HE protection is good, HESH protection is average.
Gun is nothing special. Great gun handling, terrible aim time, average accuracy, average DPM, fairly low penetration. Gun depression is good at -8.
Mobility is good, with good acceleration, decent top speed & traverse speeds, and good terrain resistance. Reverse speed is mediocre at -18km/h.
Speed is slightly above average at 52km/h.
Is it worth getting?
Object 590 is not worth getting. Its another Soviet/Chinese medium tank clone. The only unique traits of this tank are its extra gun depression and upper plate armour.
If you love Soviet/Chinese mediums and like the sound of more upper plate armour and gun depression, then you’ll probably enjoy this tank.
However, to most players the Obj.590 will just be a fairly average medium with average medium tank gameplay and characteristics.
The Object 590 is worth 6,500 gold. Its a good tank but nothing special. Other tanks such as Type 59 offer the same gameplay but can be bought for much cheaper; or tanks like Obj.274a which are similar but better in their characteristics. Object 590 overall is just fairly average and doesn’t stand out, but is still a fairly good tank.
