The T-34-85 Rudy is a tier 7 Soviet medium tank. It has great all-round stats, just like a T-34-85, but it has boosted DPM, better armour, and better gun depression than its tier 6 tech tree counterpart.

Armour
(The T-34-85 Rudy in the images is using Improved Assembly)

vs 160mm AP
When flat and facing head-on:
Upper plate 130-140mm (machine gun port 55mm)
Lower plate 90-140mm
Turret 227-350mm (100-175mm next to gun mantlet)
Gun mantlet 90-175mm
Cupola 100mm
These 2 images just show how the hull is able to be angled to try get some additional bounces, as when its un-angled everything will penetrate.

vs 160mm AP (left image), 208mm APCR (right image)
Using -8 gun depression:
Upper plate 170-180mm (machine gun port 45mm)
Turret 250-400mm (90-220mm next to gun mantlet)
Gun mantlet & cupola remain same
VS tier all 6-8 tanks:
Against all tanks it faces, the T-34-85 Rudy has weak hull armour, and all standard ammunition is able to penetrate it. As shown in the above image, the tank can be angled to produce sharp angles and bounce enemies. The hull sides are only 45mm thick though, so 150mm guns can overmatch it.
The turret is decently strong, but with enough penetration enemies can easily just penetrate the gun mantlet. If you keep the tank moving back and fourth there’s a high chance that enemies either miss, or bounce off the auto-ricochet turret cheeks.
Gun
The T-34-85 Rudy mounts an 85mm gun
-Alpha damage is 200 on AP, 170 on APCR, and 300 on HE
-It has a 4.5s reload, giving it 2689 DPM
-Penetration on AP is 144mm, APCR is 194mm, and HE is 44mm.
–Estimated aim time is 3.6/3.9s
-Dispersion is 0.326/0.293
–Gun handling is 0.12/0.12/0.06, or 0.1/0.1/0.05 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -8 degrees
Overall this gun is incredible. It has very high DPM, but also has very comfortable 200 alpha, so even if you can’t shoot enemies multiple times, your single shot of damage is still fairly significant. Other than this you also have high HE damage, great gun handling, great gun depression, and decent aim time.
The only aspect that is not great is the penetration, but its still decent enough.
Mobility
-Top speed is 54km/h forwards, and -20km/h in reverse
-Traverse speed is 72 deg/s on hard terrain, and 59.8 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 21.2 hp/t, it has a strong 690 horsepower engine for its 33 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration rate is 23.6 hp/t on hard terrain, and 19.3 hp/t on medium terrain.
–Terrain resistances are good with 0.9/1.1/1.3
The mobility of the Rudy is very good, its high power/weight ratio with good top speed mean its able to move around quite quickly, and its great traverse speed allow it to maintain a high speed even when turning.
Equipment, provisions, & consumables
The T-34-85 Rudy does not have any special provisions or consumables.
Gun Rammer:
The Rudy is not an alpha-based tank, to get its damage out its quite reliant on DPM. If the Rudy is unable to penetrate an enemy then it can use the good accuracy to aim for weakpoints, or the great mobility to flank enemies. As the tank carries only AP and APCR as its primary ammunition types, it doesn’t gain a large benefit from calibrated shells.
Though the penetration of the Rudy isn’t anything special, its also not bad, so the tank definitely doesn’t need calibrated shells. If you find yourself needing calibrated shells, consider whether you are taking the tank to the right part of the map and how you are playing it. In the role that the Rudy plays in battle, its penetration is perfectly adequate.
Use the gun rammer, it gives the tank a 4.5s reload with its 200 alpha, giving it an amazing 2689 DPM.
Improved Assembly:
The armour of the T-34-85 Rudy is too weak to enhance, the turret armour that it has is all based in auto-ricochet angles, and using enhanced armour on it will not make any difference.
Its better to use improved assembly, which increases the tank’s HP from 1200 up to 1272.
Vertical Stabilizer:
The Rudy already has great accuracy at 0.326, and as the tank doesn’t play passively, refined gun does not benefit it.
Its far more beneficial to take vertical stabilizer, and improve the on-movement-dispersion, as it will help the tank be more accurate when its constantly moving around (which this tank does).
Gameplay advice
The T-34-85 Rudy plays as a frontline brawling MT when its top tier, but more of a support MT when its bottom tier. Its quite like the T-44-85 in the fact that it has the playstyle like a T-62A, but down in tier 7.
The Rudy should always be played on the MT side of the map, this is where its gun is most effective as it won’t need to use premium ammunition as much, and it can just let its DPM run rampant.
Use gun depression:
Go hulldown and use gun depression whenever possible. Though the Rudy doesn’t have the best turret armour, its still decent and can still bounce shots. Keep the tank moving back and fourth between shots, otherwise enemies will have the chance to aim for the hatch or the turret face.
Utilize the great gun depression of this tank, its one of the few Soviet mediums with -8 degrees, and it allows the tank to use more positions effectively.
Utilize DPM and Adrenaline:
Due to having high DPM and good alpha damage, you can easily out-trade most enemies. If enemy tanks have lower alpha but a faster reload then you, just pull back into cover after each shot; if enemies have higher alpha than you, always try to put in multiple shots for every time they shoot you.
Save adrenaline for a situation where you are just able to non-stop put out damage, such as if you get in an all-out brawl, isolate a lone enemy, or if you’ve managed to find a way behind enemy lines. Adrenaline just allows this tank to put out an extremely high amount of damage, extremely quickly. It allows the Rudy to output 200 damage every 3.7s, for 15-20s depending on if you take CDS or HEC.
Flank:
If your team is in a stalemate and neither side is progressing, check the map and try to see if there’s a way to flank around enemy tanks. Due to its great DPM and reload, the Rudy always excels when its able to deal damage but not be the target of enemy guns. Flanking enemies can cause a distraction in the enemy tanks and can allow your team to break through a flank.
Overall
Overall the T-34-85 Rudy is still an incredible tank. For being one of the first ever tier 7 premiums in the game, its quite surprising how good this tank still is after all these years in the game.
The Rudy has a very competitive gun with great DPM, nice alpha, and good accuracy; along with this it has good gun depression and a decently strong turret. The mobility is also good, with great top speed, traverse, and effective acceleration. The only areas which the Rudy lacks are in its hull armour, and its penetration isn’t very impressive.
Is it worth getting?
The T-34-85 Rudy is worth getting for any player who likes mediums with fast gameplay. This tank has the perfect combination of DPM with alpha damage, which allows it to farm enemies very easily. Along with a decent turret and great mobility, its just the perfect damage dealing medium.
The T-34-85 Rudy is worth 4,000 gold. Its a great vehicle and its quite fun to play. Generally the tank is sold for quite cheap and its always worth the price.
