Armour

(The T-44-85 in the images is using Improved Assembly)

vs 160mm AP (left image), 208mm APCR (right image)
When flat and facing head-on:

Upper plate 135-140mm
Lower plate 116mm
Turret 245-390mm (130mm right next to gun mantlet)
Cupola 190-135mm

The side armour of the T-44-85 is a very good 75mm thick. In the image above it is over-angled, which is why 208mm APCR can penetrate, but the tank can sidescrape if not over-angled (over-angling is when the tank is angled past the 70 degree auto-ricochet angle).

VS tier 6:
Against tier 6 tanks there are a few which have very low penetration. Tanks such as Type 64, Sherman tanks, or T-34-85 tanks all have under 130mm penetration, and when the hull of the T-44-85 is angled, it will be able to bounce these enemies.

VS tier 7-8:
Other than the above mentioned tanks, don’t expect to bounce enemies off the front of the hull. The turret will be strong against all tanks from tiers 6-8, but there are defined weakpoints. Directly to the left and directly to the right of the mantlet are easily penetrable, but its a small and hard shot to make; and of course the cupola on the roof.

Keep the tank moving while in hulldown and enemies will find it very hard to hot the turret cheek weakpoints.

Gun

The T-44-85 mounts an 85mm gun

-Alpha damage is 200 on AP, 160 on APCR, and 300 on HE
-It has a 4.6s reload, giving it 2591 DPM
-Penetration on AP is 147mm, APCR is 210mm, and HE is 43mm.
-Aim time is 3.2s/3.5s
-Dispersion is 0.335/0.301
Gun handling is 0.12/0.12/0.08, or 0.1/0.1/0.07 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -6 degrees

Penetration loss on the T-44-85’s premium ammo is very poor at 14.29%, so every 100m the penetration drops by 7.5%, levelling off at 180mm at 500m distance.

This is a great gun to have on a tier 7 medium, its accurate with great handling and aim time, DPM is high with comfortable alpha damage, and decent penetration. Its basically the perfect blend having a bit of everything on a gun.

Mobility

-Top speed is 52km/h forwards, and -20km/h in reverse
-Traverse speed is 65.2 deg/s on hard terrain, and 58.7 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 22 hp/t, it has a very strong 748 horsepower engine for its 34 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration rate is 24.5 hp/t on hard terrain, and 22 hp/t on medium terrain.
Terrain resistances are great, having 0.9/1/1.4

The T-44-85 has a great mobility profile for a medium tank. Its acceleration rate is high thanks to both a strong engine and great ground resistances, and it has good traverse speed. Its top speed isn’t anything too amazing, but is still quite good.

Equipment, provisions, & consumables

The T-44-85 does not have any special provisions or consumables.

Gun Rammer:
T-44-85 should use gun rammer, as you need a quick reload and good DPM to compete with the high DPM enemies in tier 7. The tank also already has quite good premium rounds of 210mm penetration, and as both its standard and premium rounds are AP/APCR, they don’t receive as big of a boost from calibrated shells as other shell toes would.

Its better to use a gun rammer on this tank, it will lower the reload time from 5s down to 4.6s, and increase its DPM from 2410 to 2591.

Improved Assembly:
As all of the armour on this tank is based in good armour angling (ie: the turret), and the hull is weak, so this tank doesn’t benefit from enhanced armour.

Use improved assembly, it take the HP of the tank from 1200 up to 1272.

Vertical Stabilizer:
The T-44-85 is a very active tank in battles, and its constantly moving about and flanking. The tank benefits more form vertical stabilizer due to this, as the stabilizer will make the gun more accurate on the move. Refined gun is not needed as this tank is very rarely stationary, and already has decent accuracy which doesn’t need improving.

Gameplay advice

The T-44-85 plays a “regular” medium role. Its gameplay is similar to a T-62A, just with slightly less gun depression.

Other than what’s mentioned below, the T-44-85 really just plays how a generic/standard medium would play. Going on the medium flank, using DPM, flanking enemy tanks, making pushes, isolating enemies, etc.

Trade in DPM:
Try to put in 2 shots for every 1 that the enemy shoots. If you trade damage like this, generally you will come out on top. The only tanks you don’t want to do this against are tanks with less alpha damage than you (such as the Comet, M41D, or T23E3), as they have a quicker reload.

Go hulldown:
When the hull is hidden, enemies only have a few very small weakpoints to aim for.

Make sure to move the tank from side to side/back and fourth, as it makes it very hard for enemies to hit the turret cheeks, as they may bounce off its mantlet or edges.

Overall

Overall the T-44-85 is a great tank. Its basically a tier 7 version of the T-62A. It has great mobility with high acceleration and traverse speeds, great turret armour with decent frontal armour, and a very good gun with quick reload and nice damage.

The T-44-84 is really like a T-62A, just in tier 7, the 2 tanks share the same type of quick reload and accurate gun, they have similar mobility and hull armour, and they both have strong turrets (but the T-44’s has notable weakpoints). The two tanks even share a similar style of gameplay.

Is it worth getting?

The T-44-85 is definitely worth getting. Its a very good tank, and offers gameplay that’s quite different to other tier 7 tanks. Its also quite a fun tank due to having quite fast paced gameplay with its gun and mobility.

The T-44-85 is worth 5,500 gold. Its a good tank, its also fun, and its not too hard to play if you’re already familiar with how to play mediums.
