TS-60

TS-60 is a tier 8 USA turreted tank destroyer. It has good upper plate and turret armour with high DPM, however its extremely immobile, and has poor accuracy, aim time, and ammunition choice.

Armour

(The TS-60 in the images is using Improved Assembly)
Image slider may take a few seconds to load

Drag slider Right –> to view 225mm AP
Drag slider <– Left to view 265mm APCR

Armour when hull is flat:
Upper plate 300-315mm
Lower plate 140mm
Turret ring 205-215mm (up to 275-290mm on outer edges)
Turret cheeks 285-300mm
Cupola 85-100mm

(The main difference between these 2 levels of penetration is at the turret ring)

When the tank is angled or sidescraping, its turret ring bulge becomes exposed.
At the angle shown in the image above, this area is 150-190mm thick.

The side armour itself is 90mm, which is strong and makes this tank good at sidescraping.

vs 265mm AP
Using -7 gun depression

Upper plate 490-505mm
Turret cheeks 280-380mm
Cupola 95-100mm

VS tier 7:
Tier 7 tanks will be completely unable to go through the turret and upper plate of the TS-60.

The lower plate and cupola are weak enough that no tier 7 enemy will struggle to penetrate them.

When sidescraping or angling, the turret side bulge will be penetrable to most tier 7 tanks, though the weak area will be smaller, and enemies are more likely to bounce off the stronger parts of this area.

VS tier 8:
Most tier 8 tanks are also unable to go through the turret and upper plates at a distance. However, in a facehug, many heavy tanks will be able to penetrate the upper plate (if they can aim down on it), and most tanks can overmatch the hull engine deck or penetrate the turret ring.

Some high penetration tanks (TVP VTU, T34, Keiler, Tiger II, and most TDs) will be able to penetrate the turret cheeks on flat ground using APCR.

Same as with tier 7, the lower plate and cupola are very weak and easy to penetrate.

The bulge on the hull side will be quite easy for most tier 8 tanks to penetrate, as most of this weakpoint will show up as being penetrable.

VS tier 9:
Against higher tier enemies, the TS-60 has the same weakpoints on the lower plate and cupola.

The turret is much easier for tier 9 tanks to penetrate, but still will require them to load premium ammo to go through. The upper plate will also be penetrable by most tier 9 tanks when using premium ammo and on flat ground.

Gun

The TS-60 mounts a 120mm gun
-Damage per shot is 380 on AP, 310 on HEAT, and 410 on HE
-Reload time is 7.8s, giving it 2943 DPM
-Penetration is 242mm on AP, 290mm on HEAT, and 49mm on HE
–Estimated aim time is 4.3s/4.6s
–Base aim time is 2.6s, but it can get down to 2.12s.
-Dispersion is 0.344/0.310
–Gun handling is 0.21/0.23/0.12, or 0.18/0.2/0.1 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -7 degrees
-Gun traverse arc is 135 degrees to the left/right of the gun. The turret doesn’t turn all the way.

Overall this is a bad gun for a tank destroyer. The only good statistics on this gun are its reload time and its DPM. Penetration is low for a TD, but not bad overall in tier 8.

The aim time and gun handling are both poor, and accuracy is not impressive, making the gun feel overall quite inaccurate and slow aiming. The alpha damage of 380 is not impressive or intimidating, and the gun depression is not great considering the tank’s large size and rear mounted turret.

TS-60 also has terrible ammunition choice. While it has 380 damage on AP, its HEAT only has 310 damage, and HE only has 410 damage (For 380 on AP, HEAT should be 320, and HE should be 440-480).

When using HEAT, DPM drops down by 543, to 2400; when using HE, DPM increases by only 231, up to 3174.
Essentially, this tank is severely punished for using anything other than AP.

Mobility

-Top speed is 29km/h, reverse speed is -12km/h
-Traverse speed is 33.2 deg/s on hard terrain, and 23.7 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 13 hp/t, it has a weak 644 horsepower engine for its 49 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration rate is 13 hp/t on hard terrain, and 9.3 hp/t on medium terrain.
–Ground resistances are 1/1.4/1.8

This is overall terrible mobility. The tank is very slow, with a limited top forward speed, and a slow reverse speed. The mobility performance (traverse and acceleration) on hard terrain is unimpressive, but usable. The mobility performance on medium terrain is atrocious and the tank is extremely slow.
This poor mobility is not helped by the tank’s long hull and rear mounted turret, which make it a very awkward vehicle to maneuver.

Equipment, provisions, & consumables

TS-60 has no special provisions/consumables.

Gun Rammer:
Though the TS-60 doesn’t have impressive penetration for a TD, its still far above the average of tier 8 tanks, and it doesn’t struggle to penetrate enemies at all, so there’s no need to use calibrated shells.

Its far better to use gun rammer to take advantage of this tank’s good DPM and reload time. Gun rammer will decrease the reload from 8.3s down to 7.8s, and increase the DPM from 2737 up to 2943.

Improved Assembly:
Since the TS-60 has such weak lower plate and cupola, and such strong upper plate and turret, it doesn’t really benefit from enhanced armour.

TS-60 also has a low base HP for an assault TD, with only 1300 (most other assault TDs have 1450), so it should use improved assembly, which would increase its HP up to 1378.

Vertical Stabilizer:
The TS-60 is not a sniping tank destroyer, its a frontline assault/support tank destroyer. Of its accuracy-related statistics, the gun dispersion is the least of its issues, so there is no need to use refined gun.

Its far better to use vertical stabilizer, which will improve the terrible gun stabilization of this tank, and help its accuracy during and after movement, which is more beneficial to non-sniper tanks.

Gameplay advice

The TS-60 has very awkward and odd gameplay due to its characteristics, and the fact that its stats cause it to not really fit into any specific role.

This tank should be an assault TD, but it struggles to do that due to its weak lower plate, large profile, and low HP.

General gameplay:
This tank should always be used as a support tank to your allies. Never snipe in this as its just not suited to that role, having poor aim time, handling, and mediocre dispersion.

Take the TS-60 to the 2nd line, preferably on the heavy tank flank. In a 2nd line position, you can still support your allies with covering fire, but are close enough to the frontline that you can push up fairly quickly.

The TS-60 will work better against heavy tanks as they are slower and larger, which makes them easier to hit with your fairly inaccurate gun. Gameplay on the HT flank is also slower, which will put your poor mobility at less of a disadvantage, compared with if you took the tank to fight with mediums.

Rely on your allied heavy tanks to take hits for you, since your 1300 HP is really quite low, and the large lower plate and side profile are very easy to hit. While playing the support role, you shouldn’t be the one at the very front, taking all the hits from enemy tanks.

Plan ahead for positioning and retreating:
The mobility of this tank is genuinely so poor that you have to really plan ahead for maneuvering. If you see the flank you’re on is likely going to fall, its probably best to start falling back 20s before it actually falls.

TS-60 is slow, large, and takes ages to turn, so be careful how you drive and what positions you put the tank into. Generally, if you get into an aggressive or frontline position, your mobility is too poor to allow you to relocate or retreat.

Go hulldown:
The TS-60 has great upper plate and turret armour, making it very effective in hulldown positions. Enemies will generally try to shoot the lower plate, as its usually the default weakness on a tank, by hiding this, you force enemies to either miss/bounce, or take extra time to aim for the cupola. This extra time will let you aim your shot in better/force the enemy to be exposed for longer.

Being hulldown just lets you survive longer in battle, as your tank will be able to bounce far more than when your lower plate is exposed.

Don’t facehug enemies:
The TS-60 is weak in a facehug, since many tanks will either be able to aim down on and penetrate the upper plate, or shoot at the turret area under the gun. Facehugging enemies also puts them in a position to overmatch your 30mm engine deck (so all 90.1mm+ caliber guns can penetrate), or to very easily hit your cupola.

Also note that if you want to leave a facehug, you need good mobility, which this tank just doesn’t have.

Take time to aim:
Due to the poor accuracy stats of the TS-60, you should stop to aim every shot. This tank will miss very easily if you try to take snap shots or don’t aim properly, and it will cause the DPM to be wasted.

Sidescrape:
Due to the rear mounted turret and long hull, the TS-60 is a good sidescraping tank. Its sides are strong and it can ver easily angle its turret around a corner without exposing the tank’s front.

Be aware that there are sidescraping weakpoints, namely the turret ring right under the gun and the cupola. There’s also the bulges on the sides of the hull, directly under the turret ring. Though these are a fairly small weakpoint, enemies will still be able to penetrate them, and good players will know to automatically shoot here.

This is sidescraping against 265mm APCR, a tier 8 premium round.

The TS-60 plays as a 2nd line/frontline support tank. It has to rely heavily on its allies to take hits for it, and to conserve its HP. Be careful where you take the tank, and be aware of its limitations with its speed and accuracy. Try to use hulldown and sidescraping whenever possible.

Overall

Armour – 6/10
Gun – 5/10
Mobility – 3/10
Speed – 3/10

TS-60 overall is not a good tank.

Armour is strong on the turret and upper plate, but turret ring and cupola are weak. The armour is very awkward to use due poor mobility, the size & shape of the hull, and the rear turret mount.
Gun has poor aim time, gun handling, and ammo types/damage. Gun depression and dispersion are decent. DPM is very good.
Mobility is terrible, weak engine, slow acceleration, slow traverse speed, and slow reverse speed. Only gun flexibility is good.
Speed is poor, 29km/h.

This tank is very unimpressive and also not unique, as there are similar and much better tanks which you can get in the tech tree (namely T28, T28 Prot., or SMV CC 64).

Also note that the size, length, and rear turret mount, combined with poor mobility and a weak lower plate, make the tank very awkward to use with both armour and gun, and this isn’t something you can “see” in the stats.

Is it worth getting?

The TS-60 is not worth getting at all, and there are multiple reasons for this:

1- It lacks all “comfort stats”, it has poor accuracy, poor aim time, poor gun handling, its gun depression isn’t great, its extremely slow, it turns slowly, it has poor reverse speed, traverse speed, the hull is very long, the turret is tall, and its rear mounted. All the stats that make a tank comfortable to play, are missing on this tank.

2- It has too much competition, and all the competition is better. The TS-60 is a turreted “assault TD”, tanks with the same classification are the SMV CC 64, T28 Prot., T28 Defender, and all are more capable/enjoyable tanks than the TS-60.

3- Its trying to be a heavy tank with high firepower. Like the 3 tanks mentioned above, The TS-60 tries to be like a heavy with a lot of firepower, but it fails. Most heavy tanks are better than the TS-60, without needing the high firepower.

The TS-60 is worth 4,000 gold. Its a tank made completely irrelevant by tech tree competitors, and even cheap premiums like the TS-5. Its also not enjoyable due to its clunky nature, being slow, and having poor accuracy.
Like any tank, it can sometimes have great battles, and it does earn credits, but there is really no reason that this tank is worth getting.
