Armour
(The WZ-120-1G FT in the images is using Enhanced Armour)

When flat and facing head-on:
Upper plate 230-247mm (over the track links 270mm)
Lower plate 150mm
Gun mantlet 320mm
As you can see, even angling the tank by just 10 degrees to the left (angling to right has same effect), the armour of the tank is already harder to penetrate.

vs 265mm APCR
Using -6 gun depression
Upper plate 285-310mm (340mm on the track links)
Ideally, when using gun depression, you would hide the lower plate. In most situations where you see this tank using gun depression, the lower plate will be hidden.
VS tier 7:
Against lower tier enemies, the WZ’s armour is the equivalent of a tier 7 heavy tank. No enemy LT, MT, or HT will have enough penetration to go through the upper plate. Even when shooting premium ammo, only a handful of tier 7 tanks can actually penetrate the WZ-120-1G FT’s upper plate, if it angles then they have no chance.
VS tier 8:
Against same tier opponents, the WZ-120-1G FT has got decent armour. Most tanks will bounce standard ammo off the upper plate (if using enhanced armour).
Higher penetration tanks (such as French HT or the T34) will still be able to penetrate this tank easily, and the same goes for any tank that is even slightly above the WZ. This tank’s armour is just one enourmous angled plate, and if enemies are even slightly taller than it, or slightly above the tank (like on a hill), the angle becomes less and enemies can penetrate it.
Tanks as shown above, premium ammo can easily cut through the armour, however, all you have to do to stop this is to wiggle the tank, or wedge it upwards.
VS tier 9:
Many tier 9 MT and all tier 9 HT will be able to go through the upper plate of this tank, the only situation where this tank will bounce a tier 9 would be if its a lower-penetration tank shooting it (like a T-54), or of the WZ is using gun depression.

vs 265mm APCR
Using -3/-4 gun depression
Upper plate 250-270mm (340mm on the track links)
The WZ-120-1G FT doesn’t even need to use much gun depression to be able to bounce even most tier 8 premium ammo, as shown here. (Its maximum gun depression angle is -6)
Playing against a WZ-120-1G FT
This tank can be extremely annoying to play against, especially if a great player is playing it.
Treat this tank almost like a T-22 Medium, if its on flat ground and wiggling and angling to try and get you to bounce a shot on the upper plate, just be patient and hold your shot.
Don’t ever rush a shot at this tank, aim it in properly and wait until the tank turns to a point where its almost flat and facing to you. When it faces you directly is when its armour is the weakest. If you aren’t confident that the shot will penetrate, switch to premium ammunition and employ the same tactic; its better to still do damage to a tank like this, rather than bounce and do nothing.
Aim properly and carefully. There are shot traps on this tank:
1- On the sides of the hull its angled very sharply and covered in spaced armour (these are the little red triangles right above the tracks on the front plate)
2- The gun mantlet area, it may sound obvious, but when the tank is turning left and right, the gun mantlet can catch many shots.
3- Track links on the upper plate, these aren’t just for decoration, they count as 20mm of armour. If you accidentally shoot here (or deliberately), you shot is much more likely to bounce. This area will not show up as red because the tracks are a visual element blocking the armour highlight.
Always shoot low, the closer to the bottom of the tank you shoot at, the weaker the armour is. This is due to angling, if you shoot the lower plate, you are guaranteed to penetrate; however if you can’t hit that, always try to aim low on the upper plate.
Due to the shell’s trajectory, no matter where you are in relation to the enemy WZ-120-1G FT, the lower part of the upper plate is always about 20-30mm less in terms of effective armour compared to the upper part of the upper plate (but don’t shoot those track links, as mentioned above). However be aware of the enemy’s gun position, as they may try to block your shot with their gun.
Gun
WZ-120-1G FT mounts a 122mm gun
-Alpha damage is 400 on AP, 340 on HEAT, and 500 on HE
-It has a 8.3s reload giving it 2908 DPM,
-Penetration on AP is 248mm, HEAT is 310mm, and HE is 61mm.
-Aim time is 3.4s/3.7s
-Dispersion is 0.326/0.293
–Gun handling is 0.18/0.18/0.12, or 0.15/0.15/0.1 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -6 degrees, which may not sound very good, but considering how low profile the tank is and how low its gun is to the ground, -6 is actually quite good.
The WZ-120-1G FT’s gun is a perfect combination of stats. It has good DPM, good penetration, and good accuracy, even the gun depression is decent when you consider the armour and low profile of the WZ. The tank is able to have respectable damage per shot, while also having a fairly quick reload. The most important stats here are its great gun handling and comfortable aim time, which are very important to this tank’s playstyle.
Mobility
-Top speed is 50km/h forwards, and -20km/h in reverse
-Traverse speed is 55.3 deg/s on hard terrain, and 46.1 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 18.8 hp/t, it has a fairly strong 678.6hp engine for its 36 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration rate is 18.9 hp/t on hard terrain, and 15.7 hp/t on medium terrain.
–Terrain resistances are 1/1.2/1.7
The mobility of the WZ-120-1G FT is very good for a tank destroyer, especially one with decent armour like this. Its forward and reverse speeds are both very good, traverse speed is insanely good for a TD, and has good ground resistances.
The acceleration rate is not bad, just a touch under the average for medium tanks, so while its very quick and agile for a TD, it doesn’t break any records when compared with MT.
Equipment, provisions, & consumables
WZ-120-1G FT has no special consumables or provisions.
Gun Rammer:
The WZ-120-1G FT is a support TD, it can both snipe and it can play aggressively as a pseudo-medium tank. As it does (and should) often fight on the medium tank flank, having a quicker reload is crucial. Most medium tanks are quick, have high DPM, and fast reloads, if you are to compete against this, you also need the quickest reload possible.
The tank also already has very good base penetration, and using calibrated shells on this tank is really just the wrong choice, as not many tanks you will face can stand up against 248mm AP or 310mm HEAT penetration.
Camouflage Net:
As the WZ-120-1G FT can play as a sniping tank destroyer (and sometimes it needs to), camo net is a much better choice than coated optics. The base view range of most TDs is very low, and the WZ is no exception, with only 266.1m of view range with coated optics. Its better to use the camo net so that you can be more sneaky in battles, camo net increases stationary camo from 66% to 79%, camo while moving from 49% to 56%, and camo when shooting from 12% to 14%. With a camo net, the WZ has the 2nd highest stationary camo rating in tier 8.
Enhanced Armour:
The WZ-120-1G FT is a TD, so as a class characteristic, it has low base HP. However, increasing its HP with improved assembly is definitely the wrong choice for equipment. Doing that would only increase the tank’s HP from 1100 to 1166, an amount that is barely noticeable.
The better equipment choice is definitely enhanced armour, as this tank has an emphasis on its strong armour. Using enhanced armour would allow you to bounce many more shots, which would effectively have a larger impact on the tank’s longevity than the 66hp that improved assembly would have given.
Enhanced armour increases the upper plate thickness by between 6mm (bottom part of upper plate) and 14mm (top part of upper plate), making its effective thickness 236-262mm.

Drag slider right -> to view improved assembly (default armour)
Drag slider <- left to view enhanced armour
Vertical Stabilizer:
As the WZ-120-1G FT already has good dispersion without refined gun (0.326), and it often takes up an active playstyle where its constantly repositioning and moving, its better to use vertical stabilizer. Vertical stabilizer is a lot better to use when your tank has to move and turn constantly, as it stops your aim circle from blooming out as much, making you more accurate during and after movement.
Gameplay advice
The WZ-120-1G FT plays a lot like a TD version of the Type 59 with the way it uses its armour and mobility. However, it is still a TD, so there are still some significant gameplay differences.
It’s best to start the battle by sniping from a concealed location, the tank is accurate and has high camo rating, so it can do this well. If there is no such location to do this from, then you should play as a second line support tank. Its not ideal to rush forward at the start of the battle and immediately start playing like a medium tank, as this tank has low HP, every hit you take could make it much harder to win later in the battle.
Once the battle progresses (if your flank wins, if you see allies needing support, if you need to retreat), use the tank’s great mobility to play as a medium. However, don’t play too over-confidently, as it’s HP is low, and it can’t take too many damaging hits.
Go hulldown. When this tank goes hulldown, its biggest weakpoint gets hidden. If on flat ground, tanks will still be able to penetrate you with premium ammo, but you can mitigate this by angling left/right, or using gun depression.
Use gun depression. Even though -6 degrees doesn’t seem much, the WZ-120-1G FT only has to use a small amount of gun depression or angling, and it’s armour will become much harder for enemies to deal with. When using it’s full -6 gun depression, only the higher penetration tier 9 enemies will be able to penetrate.
Continuously wiggle and angle. Doing this makes it harder for enemies to aim for the weakest points, even if the lower plate is exposed.
Overall
Overall the WZ-120-1G FT offers very unique gameplay for tier 8, being able to both be a good sniper due to its accurate and high DPM gun with great camo rating, and being able to be a good pseudo-medium thanks to its great mobility and good armour. Its a style of gameplay that almost no other tanks in the game are able to offer.
While this tank is not OP, its still a very good tank, and in a great player’s hands this tank will definitely seem like its OP.
Is it worth getting?
The WZ-120-1G FT is an incredible tank with very good all-round capabilities which almost not other TD in the game is able to achieve. However this tank won’t suit everyone, and it can be very easily dealt with if not played in the correct way. Players who will enjoy this tank are players who like aggressive medium tank gameplay, or aggressive tank destroyers like the Obj.263, Obj.268, or WZ-113G FT.
The WZ-120-1G FT is worth 10,500 gold, it’s gameplay is very unique, and the tank is quite statistically strong. This tank is not overpowered, just due to its low HP, however its very versatile in how it plays, making it extremely powerful if you can avoid damage.
While it’s a great tank, it’s not very durable, and less experienced players will find it hard to play.

Historical info:
The WZ-120-1G FT is a very good depiction of a “what if” version of a Chinese tank destroyer, even though it is very likely that such a design did not exist (as far as we know). From 1955-1970s, China did not have any self-designed tank destroyers, instead using ISU-152’s from the Soviet Union.
Hull: During this time, China’s primary MBT was the WZ-120 (Type 59), so if China were to build a mobile anti-tank weapon, its possible that one of the concepts would be built on the WZ-120 hull.
Cabin: The superstructure seems to be influenced by Soviet designs (as many Chinese tanks were and still are) such as the SU-122-44 and SU-122-54.
Gun: WZ-120-1G FT uses a Type 60 122mm field gun modified for anti-tank purposes.
The name WZ-120-1G FT is also a good speculation (if the tank is indeed not real) at what China may have named a tank destroyer based off the WZ-120 hull. (WZ is an industrial designation, such as WZ-131, but the official name for WZ-131 was Type 62).
W: 武器 (wu qi), meaning weapon
Z: 装甲战车 (zhuang jia zhan che), meaning armoured vehicle
120: Industrial designation for the tank (in this case, the hull its built on)
-1: Variant 1 (which implies a previous version before this one)
G: 改 (gai), meaning change or modification, likely referring to the modified WZ-120 hull
F: 反 (fan), in this case meaning anti
T: 坦 (tan), meaning tank
(Contrary to popular belief, FT does not stand for “fake tank” in the Chinese TD names, it stands for “anti-tank”, referring to them being tank destroyers)
Overall the WZ-120-1G FT is actually a very good guess at what a Chinese TD would be like, considering that in the 1960s China was taking inspiration from Soviet designs (such as with the WZ-111), its probable they would have done the same with a tank destroyer design.
There is a small chance that the WZ-120-1G FT was a real tank.
This is due to most Chinese tanks of the 1950-present period still being classified, and any info on any Chinese tank (even the real ones like WZ-111) are extremely hard to find.
The WZ-120G FT and WZ-120-1G FT, along with every turretless Chinese TD in WoT, were presented to WG by KongZhong, the owner of the WoT CN server (a Chinese company).
So there’s a very small possibility that KongZhong used real documents to create these tanks, just that no one outside of KongZhong or CN government knows about these documents. However, this is the only scenario in which there is a possibility for any of the WoT Chinese TDs to be real.
