Armour vs tier 8:
Against tier 8 enemies the turret of the Lorraine 50 t is essentially impenetrable, with the only weakpoint being the small hatch at the very back of the turret.
The hull is extremely weak and won’t bounce anything from even low penetration tier 8 enemies. The only bounces on the hull will be from un-aimed shots or troll angles.
Armour vs tier 9-10:
Against tier 9-10 tanks the hull armour performs the same way, very weak and easy to penetrate, with the only bounces being from odd angled armour plates.
The turret is still very strong, but not impenetrable. Higher penetration premium rounds will be able to go through the small weakpoint on the right side of the turret cheek.
Gun
The Lorraine 50 t mounts a 120mm gun.
-Alpha damage is 380 on APCR, 320 on HEAT, and 515 on HE
-It has a 8.9s reload giving it 2574 DPM
-Penetration on APCR is 254mm, HEAT is 320mm, and HE is 60mm.
–Estimated aim time is is 3.7/3.9s
–Base aim time is 2.1s, but it can get down to 1.62s.
-Dispersion is 0.326/0.277
–Gun handling is 0.22/0.22/0.16, or 0.19/0.19/0.14 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -10 degrees.
Overall this is a good gun. The reload time & DPM are good, aim time & accuracy are good, and penetration is fairly average. Alpha damage is quite mediocre, but is made up for by having slightly quicker reload than other 120mm guns in tier 9. Gun handling is poor for such low alpha, but its also compensated for by the good aim time & accuracy.
Mobility
-Top speed is 43km/h forwards, and -15km/h in reverse
-Traverse speed is 43.49 deg/s on hard terrain, and 31.1 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 16.7 hp/t, it has a strong 920hp engine for its 55 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration rate is 16.8 hp/t on hard terrain, and 12.0 hp/t on medium terrain.
–Terrain resistances are 1/1.4/1.9
Mobility is very much a mixed bag, with the mobility on hard terrain being great, and mobility on medium terrain being mediocre.
On hard terrain the Lorraine is fast, it can reach its top speed fairly easily with its great acceleration and its great traverse speeds. On medium terrain the Lorraine moves more like a “normal heavy tank”, it accelerates and turns noticeably slower, on medium terrain the tank is generally only able to achieve 32-36km/h speed.
(Its important to note that while “average” mobility is not bad for a normal heavy tank, the Lorraine is not normal, as it has no hull armour, so its medium terrain performance is quite poor for a tank of its type.)
Equipment, provisions, & consumables
The Lorraine 50 t has access to tungsten shells.
Consumables:
Multi-purpose restoration pack is mandatory on this tank. Since the armour is weak, its much more likely that an enemy will penetrate you when they hit, and when enemies damage you, they can damage modules.
Lorraine 50 t seems to have a fairly weak ammorack, so there are multiple ways to deal with it.
You can choose whether to use both adrenaline & tungsten shells, or just one of them and use the final slot for a small repair kit. Alternatively you can use protective kit to try and increase your ammorack protection when not using a loadout with multiple repair consumables.
Gun Rammer/Calibrated Shells:
Either equipment piece works well on this tank.
On one hand, the DPM & reload time of the Lorraine are quite good, and suit its “heavium” playstyle well, for this you may want to use gun rammer, which gives you an 8.9s reload with 2547 DPM, and 254/320/60mm of penetration.
On the other hand, due to the good DPM & reload, you can afford to drop gun rammer to use calibrated shells, which is very useful for the hulldown/gun depression and “defence/holding” style of gameplay when you use the strong turret. For such situations penetrating the enemy’s strong hulldown armour is more important then reloading fast, an you may want to use calibrated shells, which give you a 9.3s reload with 267/362/65mm of penetration.
Enhanced Armour:
Enhanced armour will be useful for strengthening the small weakpoint on the right side of the turret, increasing that area from 306mm to 316mm on flat ground (326mm to 337mm when using full gun depression).
Improved assembly isn’t as useful, it only adds 84 HP, and while that helps when your hull is exposed, your gameplay should focus on using the turret armour and being hulldown, in which case enhanced armour is better.
Vertical Stabilizer/Refined Gun:
Again, both of these can work on this tank.
Vertical stabilizer helps with the poor gun handling of the Lorraine 50 t, letting it aim in faster when it stops moving, and causing the gun to lose less accuracy when moving and turning. This can be helpful for the heavium role the tank sometimes plays, being quite active and constantly moving.
Refined gun helps with the accuracy of the tank, improving it from 0.326 to 0.277. The tank will need to aim for slightly longer when it stops to become fully accurate, but the aim circle is much smaller. This is actually very good for the hulldown/gun depression gameplay of the Lorraine, where its not moving much in the hulldown position.
(Author note: I played the tank with both equipment pieces extensively, both offer roughly the same value in accuracy/handling on this tank. This is likely due to how the 3 stats are balanced, with great aim time, bad gun handling, but good accuracy.
On one hand wen using refined gun the bad handling is mitigated by good accuracy/aim time; but on the other hand improving that handling with vertical stabilizer still works since the base accuracy/aim time are already good enough to perform.)
Gameplay advice
Lorraine 50 t has unique gameplay for a tier 9 tank, being the only heavy with both terrible hull armour with a strong turret and great gun depression. Its comparable to an IS-8 if it had gun depression, or a Concept 1B/Chieftain Mk.6 moved down a tier.
General gameplay:
The Lorraine can play in 2 ways, and there are 2 things you should focus on with this tank, and these are:
-Turret armour & hulldown/gun depression use.
-Speed & a heavium playstyle.
When the battle starts, check multiple things. What map are you on, where are good hulldown & gun depression positions that you can use? If there aren’t any, then check if its practical to play as a heavium and push the medium side of the map.
Whenever possible, put the Lorraine into a position where it can use its great turret armour to just bait and bounce shots. If you can’t make progress in the battle, then try and see if there are opportunities to flank using the good speed of the tank. Avoid playing on flat ground or open terrain, if you have to do this then always try to keep some hard cover close to you so that you can retreat and avoid enemy shots.
Use gun depression & turret armour:
The strong turret and great gun depression of the Lorraine are some of the defining traits of this tank. Hiding the hull is the only way to bounce shots from enemies, since the turret is very strong and has quite small weakpoints.
You can easily dominate ridgelines and hold positions against enemies by being hulldown, just make sure to don’t sit still (since enemies can aim in on the turret cheek weakpoint) and make sure to not over expose the hull. The Lorraine hull is large, wide, and very weak, so try to only show the turret.
Angle & wiggle the hull:
In situations where you are completely exposed with no cover (such as in a brawl), try to angle and wiggle the hull.
While the hull is completely terrible for bouncing shots, there are some sharp angles which enemies might bounce off if aiming badly. The pike-nose armour layout of the tank means you can turn the hull, and the furthest upper plate will become an auto-ricochet.
You can also wiggle the hull back and fourth to hope that enemies shoot the tracks or the angled hull sides. Note that none of this is reliable for bouncing shots, but since the armour is so weak on the hull this is the best possible chance you have.
Use repair consumables wisely:
This part depends on your consumable loadout. You may have protective kit or use multiple repair kits, in which case your modules won’t be at risk as much.
In the case that you use a “hard mode” consumable loadout, with no protective kit or second repair consumable (ie: using tungsten shells, adrenaline, and multi-purpose repair) then you’ll have to use your consumables more carefully.
If your tracks are taken off, don’t immediately repair them unless you absolutely must. Wasting your only repair kit to repair tracks is a big waste, especially as the ammorack on this tank seems to get damaged often.
Also note that due to not having armour, modules and crew often get damaged/injured a lot more than on other heavy tanks just due to more shells being able to enter the tank’s armour.
Use tungsten shells/adrenaline often:
These consumables give a big boost to the damage dealing capabilities of the Lorraine 50 t. Don’t “save” them for a certain point in battle and don’t hesitate to use them. The more often that you can use these in battle, the bigger of an impact you can have on your damage score and for winning the battle.
In some cases it will be beneficial to stack the consumables (use at the same time), this way you can deal with enemies more quickly and move on to a different fight. Alternatively you could use adrenaline separate to tungsten shells, giving you a longer boost in DPM, and allowing you to use them at different times.
Tungsten shells will increase the average alpha damage from 380 up to 437, which can be helpful for securing kills on enemies which have more than 380 HP but less than 440.
Stay on hard terrain:
Due to poor terrain resistances, this tank performs massively different on the different terrain types.
On hard terrain (roads, concrete, paved areas, etc), the tank is fast, it can reach its 43km top speed fairly easily, has good acceleration, and turns quickly.
On medium terrain (roughly 80% of the map terrain, any area that’s not roads or water) the tank has mobility that would suit an armoured heavy tank, with quite slow acceleration and very average traverse speed. Generally on medium terrain, the Lorraine can only achieve 32-36km/h speed.
Since the tank has such poor armour, its mobility has to make up for it, keeping to hard terrain will make it much easier to reposition around the map, flank, or take up positions quickly.
Overall the Lorraine has gameplay similar to other heaviums that have strong turrets but weak hulls. Its gameplay mainly focuses on its strengths, which are using its strong turret to hold hulldown positions, or using is good speed to play a more heavium-like role, taking early positions or flanking.
Tank gameplay:
Overall
Armour – 5/10
Gun – 8/10
Mobility – 5/10
Speed – 8/10
Lorraine 50 t is overall a good tank.
Armour is 50/50, very weak on the hull with poor protection against HESH & HE, turret is very strong with small weakpoints. Armour is easy to use in hulldown, not for sidescraping.
Gun is good, with good DPM & reload time, average penetration, and great accuracy/aim time. Its gun handling is poor, with mediocre alpha damage. Gun depression is great at -10 degrees.
Mobility is decent, very quick on hard terrain with great acceleration & traverse, much slower on medium terrain with average acceleration & traverse for a “normal HT” (which this is not). Reverse speed is average, -15km/h.
Speed is good at 43km/h.
Is it worth getting?
Lorraine 50 t is worth getting only if its gameplay stands out to you. Its the type of tank that has good capabilities, but only works in gameplay when you know how to mitigate the weaknesses of the tank and take advantage of its strengths. While its somewhat a heavium, it doesn’t have fully blooded heavium mobility, so that’s worth nothing.
This tank will most suit players who enjoy tanks with strong turrets and hulldown gameplay along with a decent level of mobility and accuracy.
The Lorraine 50 t is worth 12,000 gold. Its a good tank with some unique features and great capabilities. Its not easy to play due to its weak armour and (in most cases) poor acceleration, so is really a tank suited to experienced players.
