Armour
(The Obj.274a in the images is using Improved Assembly)

vs 225mm AP
Upper plate 170-200mm
Lower plate 120mm
Turret 210-330mm+

vs 265mm APCR
Using -7 gun depression
-Upper plate 300mm auto-ricochet
-Turret 240-430mm+ (weakest point 210mm)
The side armour of the Obj.274a is 60mm, while it doesn’t sound very impressive, its angled inwards slightly, which increases its effective thickness. The tank is a decent sidescraper, but its not like the T-22, so only sidescrape if there’s really no other option.
VS tier 7:
Most tier 7 tanks have below 180mm of penetration, so many will bounce off the Obj.274a’s upper plate in tier 7 battles.
The lower plate won’t bounce though, and USA, French, and German HT can go through the upper plate fairly easily.
VS tier 8:
Most tanks in tier 8 will be able to easily penetrate the upper plate of the 274a when its on flat ground.Â
The tank is very effective in hulldown situations and when using its gun depression, as its hatches are very small, the turret is strong, and the upper plate becomes extremely well angled. Most tier 8 tanks will bounce off the tank when it hides the hull.
VS tier 9:Â
Tier 9 tanks will not bounce off the hull unless the Obj.274a is using its gun depression, and many tanks will even have enough penetration to go through the turret cheeks (just like the premium rounds in tier 8). Keep the tank moving to try get more bounces from enemies or make them miss the weakpoints.
In tier 9 battles, the most bounces will come from being hulldown or using gun depression.

This is against 180mm AP. Angling does help to get bounces on flat ground against low penetration rounds.
The front will bounce 170mm and less penetration when un-angled.
Gun
Obj. 274a mount a 107mm gun
-Damage per shot is 310 on AP, 270 on APCR, and 380 on HE
-Reload time is 8.7s, giving it 2145 DPM
-Penetration is 185mm on AP, 240mm on APCR, and 50mm on HE.
–Estimated aim time is 3.7s/4.0s
–Base aim time is 2.3s, but it can get down to 1.87s.
-Dispersion is 0.326/0.293
–Gun handling is 0.14/0.12/0.1, or 0.12/0.1/0.09 with Vertical Stabilizer.
-Gun depression is -7 degrees.
This gun’s alpha is fairly high at 310, and its DPM certainly isn’t bad. The aim time is decent, and accuracy/gun handling are both great. Only the penetration is slightly lacking, though its still better than tanks like the T-44-100 or T-54 Mod.1.Â
For its rounded turret and its alpha damage, -7 gun depression is one of the strongest points of this tank, and makes it extremely good in hulldown positions.
Overall this is just a great gun all-round, being accurate, and consistent, with very comfortable alpha damage and gun depression. Only its penetration isn’t the best.
Mobility
-Top speed is very good, 55km/h forwards, and a good -20km/h in reverse.
-Traverse speed is good, 65.2 deg/s on hard terrain, and 54.4 deg/s on medium terrain.
-In game acceleration rate is shown as 20.8 hp/t, it has a strong 828 horsepower engine for its 40 ton weight.
-Actual acceleration rate is 20.7 hp/t on hard terrain, and 17.3 hp/t on medium terrain.
–Terrain resistances are very quite average, with 1/1.2/1.5
For a Russian medium tank, the 274a has impressive mobility. It has a great top speed compared to other tier 8 Russian MT, and its acceleration and traverse speed are definitely not lacking. Compared to all mediums in this tier, the 274a is slightly better than average in terms of its mobility.
Equipment, provisions, & consumables
Obj.274a has no special consumables or provisions.
Gun Rammer:
While the DPM of the Obj.274a is quite good (relative to its alpha damage), its reload is still fairly long. Since its a medium tank, it will most often fight enemy medium and light tanks, and many of them have faster reloads. Its better to keep the quicker reload and higher DPM on the Obj.274a so that it can effectively brawl with enemy tanks.
Its penetration is low, but still decent enough that the tank doesn’t struggle to penetrate most enemies it faces; calibrated shells is less effective in most situations, its better to use a gun rammer.
Using gun rammer gives this tank an 9.7s reload with 310 alpha, giving it 2145 DPM.
Improved Optics:
Just like the Type 59, the Obj.274a has the joint best base view range in tier 8, with improved optics it has 302m. This is as good as most tier 10 mediums, and allows the tank to spot enemies at a more comfortable distance than most other tanks in tier 8.
Enhanced Armour/Improved Assembly:
Ether of these equipment choices can work well on this tank.
The rounded turret and well angled hull mean that the Obj.274a’s armour isn’t much less effective in battle if you don’t use enhanced armour, and want to have higher HP with improved assembly instead.
Improved assembly takes the great base HP of 1450, up to 1537.
Enhanced armour can work well on this tank due to it having pretty good armour on both the hull and turret. Using it would allow the hull to bounce more lower-penetration tanks, such as tier 7 tanks, or lower penetration tier 8 tanks (170-180mm penetration).
Enhanced armour also just generally improves the turret armour, giving it roughly 6-10mm of additional effective thickness due to how rounded the armour is.
Either equipment piece will work well on the Obj.274a, try both if you’re unsure which will suit your playstyle.
Vertical Stabilizer:
The dispersion of the Obj.274a’s gun is already very good for its alpha damage, with 0.326, so using refined gun on this tank is definitely unnecessary.
Instead use vertical stabilizer to improve the tank’s ability to shoot during and after movement, this benefits the tank’s active playstyle greatly, and makes it far more consistent in battle.
Gameplay advice
The Obj.274a is nearly identical to the Type 59 in gameplay, the only real difference being higher alpha damage and weaker lower plate.
Its general gameplay is just standard medium tank gameplay, using flanking tactics, trading damage with enemy mediums, spotting enemies, capping bases, and pushing with allies. Just play it as a standard medium tank.
Use hulldown & gun depression positions:
Always try to use gun depression and/or go hulldown. One of the selling points of this tank is the fact it has strong turret armour with a great -7 degrees of gun depression. Couple its alpha damage, accuracy, and turret armour with this and it becomes an extremely effective tank in hulldown scenarios.
Don’t sit still while hulldown:
Obj.274a has a strong turret armour profile, but there are weakpoints. When going hulldown or using gun depression, don’t sit still in front of enemy guns. The cheeks next to the gun can be penetrated by most tier 8 and 9 tanks’ premium ammo, so keep moving back and fourth to try get them to miss.
Utilize the armour:
The hull armour is very effective when using gun depression, as its extremely well angled.
On flat ground it will be able to bounce tier 7 medium tanks and some low penetration tier 8 tanks, and it can effectively facehug or sidehug tall tanks that don’t have great gun depression (such as a VK 100.01 or Predator UM).
Trade in alpha damage:
Try to avoid DPM battles with enemies, while the DPM of the 274a is not bad, its definitely more of an alpha damage focussed tank, so it benefits much more from trading damage per shot.
The relatively long 8.7s reload can be mitigated with its good amount of HP and its strong hulldown profile, and this tank can employ peek-a-boom tactics well due to this.
If you trade shot-for-shot with an enemy, generally you will come out on top, as most enemy mediums have less alpha damage.
Use your tank’s stats to your advantage:
The Obj.274a excels in speed, alpha damage, accuracy, and turret armour. Consciously apply this to your gameplay, as it will help you to fully utilise the potential that this tank can achieve (as opposed to you playing the 274a the same way you would play a Pershing, for example).
-Use the speed to flank, circle enemies, quickly relocate to a different position or side of the map, support allies, etc. 55km/h and good acceleration is among the more agile and flexible mediums in tier 8.
-Use the alpha damage to trade, 310 is quite high, and you can out-trade most enemy mediums, and equally trade even with many heavy tanks. You also don’t need to put in many shots for damage to stack up quickly.
-Use the turret armour to block damage, to trade even more effectively, it will help your HP last longer, letting you influence the battle more. The 7 gun depression, combined with this strong turret, and the accurate 310 alpha gun are the main aspects which make this tank so strong and so reliable in battle.
The Obj.274a basically just plays the standard medium tank role in battle. Flanking enemies, pushing the medium flank, and using hulldown and gun depression positions. Play it like a “standard” medium tank, and utilise the strengths this tank has in its stats, and you should perform very well in it.
Overall
Overall the Obj.274a is an amazing all-round medium. It has some of everything, decent hull armour, strong turret armour, great accuracy, great 310 alpha damage with-7 gun depression, and even good mobility.
Its a different flavour of Russian medium tank, having more alpha with a rounded turret, which makes its gameplay quite unique in tier 8. While the Type 59 is very similar, that tank also has less alpha damage and a less accurate gun than the 274a.
This tank is just the perfect combination of overall stats to make it one of the best tier 8 mediums, rivalling the Chimera and Progetto 46 in the top position.
Is it worth getting?
The Obj.274a will be appreciated by players who enjoy medium tank gameplay. It has essentially every stat on a medium tank to make it good at what it does. Its also quite friendly for players who are unfamiliar with mediums, since its HP and armour are forgiving, and it has both a good gun and mobility profile for basically any player to do well with.
The Obj.274a is definitely a tank that is worth having, and its quite unique in its tier. Its one of the strongest medium tanks due to how good its general stats are, not lacking mobility, not lacking armour, and having both great accuracy and alpha damage.
The Obj.274a is worth 9,500 gold, its a very good tank and has everything you would want in a medium tank, while also not being boring to play.
